  • 👉 Marais – best area for the first stay
  • 👉 Montmartre – the best area for a stay to experience a local atmosphere
  • 👉 Quartier Latin – best area for a stay in a lively neighborhood
  • 👉 Opéra – Best area for a stay in Paris with children

Below, I’ll introduce you to Paris and walk through each recommended area to stay in Paris so you can learn about the different parts of the city before your trip to the French capital.

Where to stay in Paris? The 5 best areas and places to stay 🇫🇷 3

Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but also one of the most visited. From impressive architecture to world-famous artists – Paris has it all.

Paris has a rich cultural offering, and it is no coincidence that the city itself has inspired music, literature, film and art.

Paris is divided into 20 different districts. These districts are called arrondissements.

So when choosing a residential area in Paris, you need to pay attention to which arrondissement you want to live in.

What are the best accommodations in Paris, you may ask?

Here are the five best areas in Paris to stay in as a tourist.

1. Marais – best area for the first stay

In Le Marais, where narrow streets and medieval buildings are still preserved, you can feel the past.

Located in the 4th arrondissement in the center of Paris, the Marais is the favorite neighborhood of many tourists in Paris. So if you’re looking for the best accommodation in Paris on your first visit to France, the Marais is a safe bet.

In the Marais, you can discover many different museums, and Notre Dame de Paris is also located here. Other attractions include the Hotel de Ville and the Place de Bastille.

The iconic Notre Dame is located near the Marais.

The gardens on Place des Vosges are also an ideal place to relax.

The Marais is also close to the Seine, so you can easily cross over to the south bank and experience the lively Latin Quarter – an area I mention later in this guide to Paris accommodation, as it is also one of the best areas of the city.

2. Montmartre – the best area for a stay with a local atmosphere

Where should you live in Paris if not in the Marais? Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement is a very charming district and I have to admit that Montmartre is my favorite district in Paris.

It may be that there are a lot of tourists there too, but that’s the case everywhere in Paris – I think Montmartre has a unique, really cozy atmosphere.

And then I imagine that there is more local color here than in the absolute center of Paris.

Le Consulat in Montmartre.

The area was once an artists’ village, where both Dalí and Picasso himself lived.

Montmartre is known for its hill, which you can climb by cable car or take the stairs for a more challenging activity.

At the top of the hill is the white Sacre Coeur basilica, which can be seen from much of the city and is well worth a visit – even if you don’t live in Montmartre.

On the artists’ square (Place de Tertre), you can admire the many artists who create creative masterpieces. This is also a good option for you if you want to have a self-portrait painted.

Montmartre is worth considering if you are artistically inclined or want to live in an area of Paris that has something special to offer.

And I mean that in the best possible way – I love Montmartre!

Where to stay in Montmartre

Montmartre is a relatively small area, and you don’t have to stay right at the foot of the Sacre-Coeur to feel the good atmosphere of the 18th arrondissement – you can also choose a hotel in the Pigalle district of the 9th arrondissement.

Here you will find three good hotels in Montmartre in different price categories.

As mentioned above, it’s difficult to determine the best area in Paris and therefore the best for families with children, but if you book a hotel in the Opéra, you won’t go wrong in the city.

One advantage of staying here is that the area is central and well connected. Whether you land at Charles de Gaulle or Orly airport, you can get to your hotel quickly – and back to the airport again.

The Louvre, the Champs Élysées and much more are also within walking distance from here.

5. Champs Élysées – best area for shopping

Although many associate Paris with cozy cafés, historical monuments, buildings and art, the metropolis is also known for its excellent stores with chic clothing.

Paris is not just any city when it comes to shopping.

And here we can’t miss the Champs Élysées, which is famous the world over and is perhaps one of the most beautiful streets in the world.

We are here in the 8th arrondissement and therefore still very central in Paris, but in the western part of the city and very close to the Eiffel Tower.

Together with London, New York and Milan, the city is also known as the “world capital of fashion”.

If you love the big fashion houses and brands such as Dior, Chanel, YSL and Louis Vuitton, then the Champs Élysées is a good choice for your stay in Paris. You can shop for haute couture in style on the famous street.

Unsafe areas to avoid in Paris (where you should NOT stay overnight)

A GUIDE TO EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD IN PARIS (from a French perspective)
A good video about where not to stay in Paris

There are some areas in Paris that you should generally avoid.

In Paris, it is advisable to stay away from certain areas in the evening and at night. It is best to avoid places such as the Gare du Nord and the Gare de l’Est in the 10th arrondissement.

At least in the evening and at night.

In the 1st arrondissement is the Chalet Les Halles, which should also be avoided in the evening, and the same applies to the northern part of the 19th arrondissement.

In the evening and at night, it is also not a good idea to stay near the Porte de Montreuil (19th arrondissement) and the Bois de Bologne (20th arrondissement).

I hope this guide to the best neighborhoods in Paris has helped you and that you are now ready to enjoy your trip to the French capital.

Frequently asked questions:

Where should you stay the first time in Paris?

If you are visiting Paris for the first time, I would personally recommend Le Marais as the ideal place to stay. This historic neighborhood, which spans the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, offers a unique blend of old world charm and modern vibrancy that perfectly embodies the spirit of Paris.
Here’s why Le Marais is my top choice:
Central location: Le Marais is strategically located, making it easy to explore the city. Landmarks such as Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou are all within walking distance.
Architectural beauty: Le Marais is one of the few districts where the narrow, winding streets of medieval Paris have been preserved. The beautiful old buildings and cobbled streets take you back in time.
Fashion and shopping: Le Marais is known for its fashion boutiques, vintage stores and art galleries and is a paradise for fashion and art lovers alike.
Food & drink: The area is teeming with hip cafés, bakeries and first-class restaurants. You will also find a wide selection of lively bars and pubs.
Cultural diversity: As the historical center of the Jewish community in Paris and the current center of the LGBTQ+ community, Le Marais is a testament to the city’s multicultural heritage and vibrant diversity.
Historical sites: from the oldest planned square in Paris, the Place des Vosges, to the beautiful Musée Picasso, there is plenty of history and culture to discover right on your doorstep.
In short, Le Marais is a neighborhood that ticks all the boxes for a first stay in Paris. Its location, charm and variety of attractions make it a perfect starting point for exploring the rest of the city.

Where should I stay in Paris to reach everything on foot?

Paris is known as the “city of walks” and is the perfect city to explore on foot. While it is difficult to find a place where you can reach every single sight on foot, there are certain areas that are perfect for discovering the different facets of the city.
If you are looking for typical Paris, Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the 6th arrondissement is a good place to start. This district is known for its cafés, once frequented by famous writers and philosophers, as well as its numerous art galleries and antique stores. In addition, Notre Dame and the Louvre are just a short walk away.
Le Marais in the 4th arrondissement is another excellent option that combines history, fashion and culture. Le Marais is known for its narrow, winding streets, beautiful old buildings and trendy stores. It is also home to the Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris, and the Centre Pompidou, the museum of modern art in Paris.
If you want to be closer to the iconic sights, the area around the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysées is ideal. Both the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe are within walking distance from here, and there are plenty of shopping opportunities and restaurants along the Champs-Elysées.
If you prefer something a little more unconventional, head to Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement. This area is famous for its artistic heritage, the Sacré-Cœur basilica and, of course, the breathtaking view of Paris from the top of the hill.
Remember that Paris is a city best explored without a fixed plan. Wherever you are, take the time to stroll through the city and let yourself be enchanted by its many beauties.

What is the best area to live in Paris?

It’s hard to pinpoint the best area in Paris, but I recommend staying in the Marais, Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, the Opéra and near the Champs Élysées.

In which district of Paris is the Eiffel Tower located?

The Eiffel Tower is located in the 7th arrondissement, which is not on my list of the best areas in Paris. You will get more for your money if you book a hotel elsewhere.

Where should I stay in Paris if I want to go on a romantic getaway?

For a romantic getaway, Montmartre is unbeatable. The cobbled streets, charming cafés and the impressive Sacré-Cœur basilica make this area the perfect place for lovers.
