Best Zakynthos Accommodation: Top 10 Areas for Holidays to Zakynthos 🇬🇷

Immerse yourself in Zakynthos, the third largest jewel of the Ionian Sea and a Greek island that has stolen many hearts.

With a coastline that stretches as far as the eye can see, landscapes that could make poets weep and a nightlife that never sleeps, it’s no wonder that both Greeks and travelers from afar fall in love with this place.

Zakynthos is not a one-size-fits-all island, but offers something for everyone, young and old.

Whether you’re a history buff looking for ancient sites or a partygoer who wants to dance until dawn, there’s something for everyone here.

And yes, who could forget the legendary Shipwreck Beach?

Are you considering a trip to Zakynthos? Immerse yourself in the local sights and experience the island to the full.

I have created this guide to help you choose the best Zakynthos accommodation. Speaking of which, during my visit I stayed at the 👉 Yria Hotel (⭐ 8.1) right on the harbor in Zakynthos Town. It has minimalist furnishings, earthy tones and first-class facilities. My boyfriend and I got a twin room with a balcony facing the sea. Their breakfast? Divine. And kudos for the strong WiFi and free parking – I’d go back in a heartbeat!

1. Zakynthos Town: best area for a first stay

Zakynthos Stadt

The history of the city is a story of resistance. After the devastating earthquake of 1953, the city was quickly rebuilt, taking care to preserve its old-world charm. Today it is a delightful blend of Venetian history and modern port facilities.

Start your exploration at Solomos Square, which is crowned by the statue of Dionysios Solomos. Nearby are the city library and the Post-Byzantine Museum. Just a few steps away is the church of St. Dionysios, the patron saint of the island. There are many stores, cafés, bars and restaurants in this lively district.

Don’t miss the other highlights of the city, such as St. Mark’s Square, also known as Liberty Square, with its famous Liberty Tree. Also visit the Solomos & Eminent Zakynthians Museum and of course the Venetian Castle, which is perched on a rock and offers a panoramic view over the harbor.

At the end of the harbor is a beach that is popular with tourists and locals alike. In the heart of the town, family-run tavernas serve delicious dishes, while the bars play live music and the nightclubs keep the party going until dawn.

2. Tsilivi: best area on Zakynthos for families

Tsilivi Strand

Located in the north-east of the island, just 5 km from Zakynthos town and 9 km from the airport, it is a popular destination for families.

I’ve always loved the pristine sandy beaches, the water sports and the beach life.

And it’s child-friendly!

The blue flag ensures the safety of the little ones, while the adults can let off steam to their heart’s content.

You are spoiled for choice: beach stores, supermarkets, souvenir stores and even chic boutiques and jewelers.

And the food?

Tempting taverns, cafés and restaurants fill the air with delicious aromas.

And when night falls, you can round off the evening with a sumptuous dinner or a drink in one of the cozy bars.

3. Psarou – Ammoudi: Zakynthos’ secret piece of paradise

Psarou, Zakynthos

Are you longing for peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle? Then I’ll let you in on a secret: Psarou.

This jewel on the north coast, bordering Ammoudi and close to Zakynthos town, has retained its traditional charm.

Psarou is one of seven beaches on the island that have been awarded the Blue Flag.

However, sun loungers and parasols are not to be expected everywhere, but only in front of some vacation apartments.

The narrow sandy beach with turquoise waters is a dream for young children and teenagers.

If you are looking for water sports or a lively beach life, you should look elsewhere.

Here you can relax, reflect and enjoy the simplicity.

There are several apartment complexes, boutique hotels and villas that invite you to linger.

4. Alykes/Alykanas: Relaxed family atmosphere on Zakynthos

Alykes Zakynthos

The picturesque village of Alikon! With its four main beaches – Alikanas, Alykes, Psarou and Ammoudi – it is a place where families and couples can relax.

These warm, calm, shallow and sandy beaches are made for a postcard.

They are not overloaded with touristy bells and whistles, but you will find the essentials here – a quaint canteen here and there.

If you like things a little livelier, you should head to the village center.

Surrounded by fertile vineyards and olive groves, Alykon invites you to explore – on foot, by bike or even on horseback.

For overnight stays, Alykes and Alykanas offer a range of cozy guesthouses to luxurious hotels for every budget.

5. Agios Nikolaos (Skinari)

Makrys Gialos beach

Believe me, there’s nothing better than strolling through the heart of Zakynthos and discovering the charm of Ágios Nikólaos. It’s not the usual vacation hotspot, but a fascinating harbor – a real breath of fresh air!

Although the main beach is rocky, it is particularly popular with families looking for peace and quiet away from the tourist hustle and bustle. Anyone who has ever listened to the gentle lapping of the waves here will understand why.

But this gem has even more to offer. Take a detour to the village of Volímes and treat yourself to some local delicacies. Imagine tasting artisan cheese, enjoying a fine drop of wine, drizzling golden honey on fresh bread or buying exquisite ceramics. Not to mention the charm of Makrýs Gialós with its inviting sandy beach.

And did I mention the water? It’s like a natural healing bath, rich in sulphur. Perfect for melting away aches and pains or even that annoying cellulite.

After being enchanted by the beauty and character of the town, you can browse through the numerous stores, picturesque cafés, lively bars and delicious tavernas. And if you want to relax, you are spoiled for choice between numerous hotels and guesthouses with Greek charm.

6. Argasi: The heartbeat of Zakynthos for everyone

Argassi Zakynthos (Zante) Greece

It is one of the classic treasures of Zakynthos with some of the oldest resorts on the island. And all in a prime location – just a stone’s throw from the capital and the airport.

When I think of a vacation spot for all ages, Argasi comes to mind. Its beach stretches for an enticing one kilometer, even if it is admittedly a little narrower. But what it lacks in width, it makes up for in dynamism! Imagine deckchairs basking in the Greek sun, colorful umbrellas flapping in the breeze, boats setting off on adventurous trips and equipment that invites you to take part in numerous water sports.

And do you know what the best part is? The lively promenade that never seems to sleep. Hotels, stores, restaurants and bars are open day and night and offer something for everyone.

But don’t just enjoy, as tempting as that may be. Immerse yourself in the history of Argasi. The Argasi Bridge, which rises in an arch into the sea, is a true spectacle. And for those looking for a heavenly view, the Panagia church sits enthroned on Mount Skopos and tells stories dating back to 1624.

Would you like to settle down in Argasi, even if it’s only for a short time? From cozy studios and spacious apartments to luxurious hotels and villas, you’ll find the perfect nest to relax and dream.

7. Vasilikos: Zakynthos’ untouched natural paradise

Gerakas

Away from the typical tourist hustle and bustle, you have the feeling of immersing yourself in nature’s private quarters. This gem, surrounded by flourishing flora, vibrant fauna, manicured olive groves and intoxicating pine forests, just screams tranquillity. And if, like me, you are always in search of peace and quiet, then this is your sanctuary.

You might think you’re worlds away, but it’s only a few kilometers to the bustling city. And what village charm there is here! Old stone houses, traditional tavernas and restaurants that invite you to culinary adventures. And here’s my weakness: the beaches. They are pristine, and some of them are even home to the endangered Caretta Caretta turtles – a sight that makes your heart soar.

While some beaches are bursting with simplicity, others offer ancient Greek delicacies as well as flavors from around the world. Imagine sipping a coffee, lazing under an umbrella and maybe even diving into the underwater world.

Would you like to settle down in Vasilikos for a while? I wouldn’t blame you. Although the village exudes tranquillity, there are plenty of adventures to be had here. And whether you’re looking for a hotel, a cozy room, a vacation home or a villa, you’ll find your dream accommodation here.

8. Kalamaki: The turtle-protected beach

Best Zakynthos Accommodation: Top 10 Areas for Holidays to Zakynthos 🇬🇷 13
Kalamaki Strand

Imagine a beach just six kilometers from the hustle and bustle of the capital of Zakynthos and even just three kilometers from the airport. This is Kalamaki, a sun-drenched sandy beach in the bay of Laganas. And if you’re traveling with small children, which I often recommend to my friends, the shallow, child-friendly waters here are a paradise for them.

But Kalamaki has more to offer than meets the eye. The enchanting Caretta Caretta turtles nest here. When these ancient sea creatures lay their eggs, certain areas become sacred to protect the future hatchlings. Take your children with you and be enchanted by the stories about these turtles.

A stroll through the streets of Kalamaki is an experience in itself. From convenient supermarkets to chic boutiques selling fashionable clothes and bags, to souvenir stores that bring back memories of the island, it’s all there. But if you’re tempted by the nightlife, take a short trip to the clubs in Laganas (3 km) – Kalamaki’s surroundings will bring a smile to the quieter souls.

Would you like to stay in Kalamaki? Well, it’s not all about turtles and beaches. From cozy studios and apartments to luxurious hotels with spas, there’s a paradise waiting for you.

9. Laganas: Zakynthos’ Party Pulse

Laganas

When summer calls and the sea beckons, how do you want to spend your days? If you want to sit on a quiet beach with a book, Laganas might not be for you. But if you crave pulsating beats and nights that never seem to end, then welcome to the heart of Zakynthos!

Laganas is located in the south of the island and has been a legendary party spot for years. Its extensive, 9 km long sandy beach is not only a magnet for young people and partygoers, but also an inviting place for families. Here, the beach offers more than just azure blue sea – sun loungers, beach bars and restaurants provide additional comfort.

A little tip: even if the atmosphere is inviting for jet skiing, don’t forget that the water is off-limits. Laganas beach hides a precious secret. It is under the watchful eye of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which protects the nesting grounds of our beloved Caretta Caretta turtles.

As you stroll through the center of Laganas, you’ll be greeted by stores selling everything from fresh produce to trendy clothing and small souvenirs to remind you of the Greek sun. Hungry? Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Greek delicacies or international treats, you’ll find it here.

With over 100 bars, from karaoke venues to those playing the latest hits, the party doesn’t stop until the sun announces a new day. So lace up your dancing shoes!

10. Keri, the best area on Zakynthos for exploring

Best Zakynthos Accommodation: Top 10 Areas for Holidays to Zakynthos 🇬🇷 17
Mizithres, Zakynthos

Have you ever dreamed of a tranquil village on the edge of an island? Keri, tucked away on the south-eastern tip of Zakynthos, is a dream come true. The village’s appeal is not limited to its mountainous charm. After just a few minutes’ descent, you will find a cozy pebble beach that has not yet been spoiled by commerce, but pampers its visitors with simple luxury.

Lose yourself (in a positive sense!) as you stroll through the picturesque alleyways of Keri. For me personally, there’s nothing quite like the charm of the village’s narrow streets, lined with stone houses that tell stories of times long past. There are local stores in the heart of the village and I can tell you that the seaside tavernas serving the freshest seafood are a little slice of heaven.

Many visitors are drawn to the Keri coast, where there’s a wider range of accommodation and a slightly livelier nightlife. But if you’re like me and crave a more authentic experience, opt for hillside rooms, chic apartments or even some of the newer hotels that have sprung up recently.

But here is the crown jewel: not far from Keri lie the majestic Mizithres. Two colossal rocks that rise out of the azure blue sea right on the coast. Believe me, you should not miss this sight. Ready for an adventure?
