The 6 Best Dog Backpack Carriers of 2024, Tested and Rated

One of the highlights of being a furry best friend is taking your pup on adventures. But it’s not always easy to do that while juggling leashes, phones, and all the other things we normally carry. With the best dog backpack carriers, we can have our hands free during these endeavors, whether for active activities like hiking or camping or if we’re out and about in the city instead. These best dog backpack carriers are ideal for small to medium-sized dogs and usually offer space for other essentials such as treats and water. They distribute the weight across the back, making for more comfortable transportation of the dog (as opposed to a normal carry-on). Best dog backpack carriers are also a fantastic choice for older dogs – or those with mobility issues – so they can still get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

With so many best dog backpack carriers on the market to choose from, we narrowed down the selection with a series of field tests conducted by dog owners over six months. Fourteen products were evaluated for performance, quality, value, and comfort. We also spoke with Dr. Heidi Gordon and Dr. Beverly Blinn-Knapp, veterinarians at Burnt Hills Veterinary Hospital, to get their expert advice on choosing and using backpack bags for our pets.

Why we love it: With padded straps, easy assembly and plenty of ventilation, you and your dog will be comfortable in stressful airports.

What to note: It is important that you check the airlines’ requirements for the size of the bag before use, as it may not fit under all seats.

Our favorite for air travel is the Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack, as it offers a high level of comfort and ventilation thanks to the windows that can be folded down on several sides. We noticed that this carrier is very easy to assemble and that attaching the bottom padding only takes a few seconds. We also appreciated that the carrier was helpful when our miniature poodle got tired or was not allowed to run in certain areas of the airport. Depending on the size of your dog, he can stick his head out of the top opening when the zipper is opened and look around freely. During the flight, the transport box is designed to keep your puppy safe. It has a lead that can be attached to the harness, as well as scratch-resistant mesh and cuddly plush bedding. The Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack is definitely one of the best dog backpack carriers that is particularly suitable for air travel.

Why we love it: The design is uncomplicated and easy to use.

What to note: It runs a little small.

The Yudodo Reflective Dog Carrier for Pets is available in three sizes and is suitable for a variety of small dogs. With this sling, you can do hands-free activities like running errands or even pushing a stroller with your pup in tow. We found that the sling was much lighter than expected, didn’t pinch our shoulders, and was very comfortable to wear; for a 12-pound dog, the medium size was ideal. The material is soft yet sturdy, and the mesh front maximizes air circulation so your dog doesn’t get too hot. If you prefer a crossbody design over a traditional dog backpack, this sling is a fantastic option. The material is easy to wipe clean, and an outer pocket on the front and a small inner pocket are great for storing small items such as treats or poop bags. The drawstring closure makes it easy for your dog to put on and take off, and the padded strap ensures comfort even when worn for long periods. The Yudodo Reflective Dog Carrier is definitely one of the best dog backpack carriers for those who prefer a sling design.

Why we love it: It is very robust and has a solid structure.

What to note: It is a little heavy.

The Timbuk2 Muttmover Luxe backpack is ready to go right out of the box. We love that it’s a well-constructed dog backpack with a hard bottom so it can stand on its own two feet. This backpack offers some extra comfort features such as wide, padded straps, a padded back pad and chest and hip straps. It has plenty of zippers and can be fully opened, making it easy to put a puppy in. We also liked the fantastic extras, such as the additional water bowl, the side mesh inserts and a small window for the dog to look out of. This bag is great for bike rides or walks with your dog as it is solidly constructed and offers first class comfort for both you and your dog. Why we love it: This minimalist bag won’t look out of place on the city streets.

What to note: The attachment to the harness is somewhat difficult to handle.

For those looking to transport their dog in style, the Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack is our top choice due to its high-quality features, lightweight profile and attention to detail. It features deep pockets to store extra items like a water bottle or leash, as well as an interior leash holder, two D-ring hooks on the straps and an exterior zippered pocket for extra storage. We also appreciated the padding for the owner’s back and shoulders, but our favorite detail was the zippered flap that prevents dog fur from getting caught on it. We also found it helpful that the carrier stands upright, making it easy to load and unload a pup, and we found that our dog was relaxed while in it. The sleek design of this bag makes it look like a traditional dog backpack and is versatile – from walking around town to traveling with your furry companion. The Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack is undoubtedly one of the best dog backpack carriers for those who value style and functionality.

The details: 17.5 x 11 x 9 inches | 1.8 pounds | 420D nylon | Fits dogs up to 15 pounds

Other backpack carriers for dogs that we liked

Two dog backpacks that we liked didn’t make our final list, but offer features that could be helpful for some pet owners.

Kurgo Nomad Backpack: This backpack was comfortable to carry and distributed the dog’s weight evenly. It also offers plenty of storage space for extra items, but it lacks ventilation and we felt that our dog got too hot in the backpack during the warm summer months.

Jespet & Goopaws animal backpack: This bag is versatile as it sits on its side and can be carried as a regular tote or with backpack straps. The thick plastic mat on the bottom helps to maintain the shape of the bag, but it was a little too big for our needs.

Our test procedure

For this test, we asked actual dog owners to put each backpack carrier through a series of real-world, hands-on experiments. When testing these backpacks, the dog’s comfort was the top priority, and our tests only continued when the pup was happy in it. First, all backpacks were unpacked and assembled where necessary, noting the difficulty of assembly. Then the rucksacks were tested for features such as smooth zippers, generous storage compartments and material quality, before testing comfort with a dog inside and the ease with which the dog could be secured inside.

Each owner took the rucksack for a walk and paid attention to how the dog reacted and whether it seemed relaxed over time. Overall, the rucksacks were rated according to their performance, comfort, quality and value. At least two field tests were conducted with the backpacks over a three-week period, and each backpack will be used for six months after these initial tests to gain further insight.

Tips for buying a backpack carrier for dogs

Think about where and when you will use it

When buying a backpack for your dog, you should consider how and where you will use it. If you’re going to use it on a bike, you’ll need something sturdier than if you’re traveling with your dog on an airplane and need something smaller that will fit under the seat. If you are going hiking, you should choose a backpack with hip and chest straps to increase comfort and distribute the weight evenly. If you have a small breed dog and only want to take it with you for short errands or a walk, a sling might be right for you.

Make sure that your dog complies with both the height and weight limits.

Most dog backpacks include weight capacity or packing dimensions to help buyers decide which size is best for their dog. Some even include instructions on how to properly measure your dog to determine the correct backpack size. Make sure that you do not exceed the weight limit of the backpack. You should make sure that your dog has enough room to sit comfortably in the bag.

“It’s important that the dogs can choose the position in which they sit comfortably and don’t get pressure sores,” explains Dr. Gordon.

“The dog should be able to sit in it and move around a little so that it is comfortable,” adds Dr. Blinn-Knapp.

Safety and ventilation have priority

When using dog backpacks, it is important that your dog feels comfortable, safe and content. Backpacks that have a dog harness attachment will ensure that your dog is secure when out and about. Look for carrying systems with generous mesh ventilation areas to maximize air circulation for your dog.

“The backpack should have lots of mesh on the sides so that it is well ventilated,” explains Dr. Blinn-Knapp.

Consider bonus functions

If you’re taking a dog on adventures big and small, you’ll need space for extra things like treats, water, leash, toys, etc. Consider buying a backpack that has additional pockets or integrated storage spaces. Clips on the straps, outer and side pockets ensure that you have your hands free and don’t have to carry another bag.

Frequently asked questions

Are backpack carriers safe for dogs?

Yes, backpack carriers are safe for dogs as long as they are used appropriately and are the right size for your dog. It is important that pups get used to the backpack before using it for an extended adventure and that it is well ventilated.

“Some dogs do not tolerate being carried in a carrier at all, while others enjoy being carried and associate it with an adventure. As with any new or different experience, I would recommend a slow introduction and stop if the dog becomes restless or uncomfortable,” advises Dr. Gordon.

How long can a dog stay in a rucksack bag?

This depends on how well your dog tolerates being in the crate. However, it is always important to give your dog breaks so that he can get some fresh air, stretch his legs, go to the toilet and move around.

“I would start with short periods of 5 to 10 minutes in the carrier so that the dog can get used to it. If the dog becomes restless, it’s time for a break. Once the dog is comfortable in the carrier, you can probably wear it for 1 to 3 hours, but you have to work up to that amount of time,” explains Dr. Gordon.

What activities can I do with my dog in a backpack carrier?

The beauty of a dog backpack is that it can be used for a variety of activities where you want to take your dog with you. From backcountry camping to air travel, the benefit of having your dog in your backpack will come in handy in many situations.

“With our bag, the dog was completely enclosed inside. On the side, it was the right size to fit under an airplane seat, and then you can carry the dog on your back through the airport. My husband says it’s easier than it seems and quite comfortable,” says Dr. Blinn-Knapp.

Avoid using a carrier if you are traveling on a scooter or motorcycle, for example, or if your dog shows signs of discomfort when in it. It is not recommended to use this type of carrier for larger dogs as they are too heavy to be comfortable for the dog owner or the animal.

How do I clean a backpack carrier for dogs?

When cleaning your dog bag, make sure you follow the instructions on the product website. Most backpacks are made of waterproof fabric with inserts or padding that can be easily wiped clean or cleaned in the washing machine.
