Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand, and it’s easy to get there by flying into the small airport (which can be accessed from several places in Thailand) or taking a ferry.
The island is located in the Gulf of Thailand east of Surat Thani, and it’s popular to combine a trip to Samui with a visit to the nearby islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (which I’ve done on several trips to Thailand).
I have been to Koh Samui for about two weeks on two trips, so I know the island and its different areas very well.
Koh Samui is a fairly large island, and there are big differences between the various vacation areas.
In this guide, I will introduce you to the best places to stay on Koh Samui, depending on what kind of vacation and atmosphere you are looking for.
So, let’s get started: Where to stay in koh samui?

1. Choeng Mon – Peace and authentic Samui magic ⭐️
Choeng Mon in Koh Samui is the perfect place for anyone looking for a vacation full of relaxation and adventure.
The area is known for its peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for families, couples and anyone who wants to enjoy some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I stayed here on my last trip to Samui (see my hotel in the section below) and liked the vibe of the area, which is very laid back but still close to other towns, making it easy to get to where the action is.

Choeng Mon beach is a real highlight with its white sand and crystal-clear water. It is perfect for sunbathing, swimming and water activities in a less crowded environment than other places on Koh Samui.

In addition to beach life, Choeng Mon offers a mix of luxurious resorts and budget hotels, so there is something for every budget.

Not far from Choeng Mon, you can visit the impressive large Buddha statue. This sight is a must-see for culture lovers and offers a unique insight into local spirituality.

The location of Choeng Mon is ideal.
The island’s airport is within easy reach and it is close to lively areas such as Chaweng and Bophut, which are great for shopping and nightlife (more on these areas later in the guide).
It literally only took 10 minutes to get from the airport to my hotel. By the way, you can look forward to flying to or from Koh Samui airport; it really is something special, in a good way.
You can travel from Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Singapore and Hong Kong to Samui.
If you choose to stay in Choeng Mon, you will get the best of Koh Samui: beautiful beaches, cultural experiences and a relaxed atmosphere.
Best places to stay in Choeng Mon
As already mentioned, this area of Koh Samui has everything from luxury resorts to small boutique hotels and affordable bungalow hotels.
Here are some of my favorite hotels in Choeng Mon – starting with the most luxurious and then “going down” in price.
The 👉 Melia Koh Samui is a luxury hotel located directly on the beach and offers an incomparable blend of comfort and elegance.

The hotel is known for its spacious rooms and suites, which are tastefully furnished with great attention to detail.
A unique feature of the Melia Koh Samui are the lagoon-shaped swimming pools that meander through the complex and create the feeling of a private oasis.

Guests particularly praise the hotel’s first-class service, exquisite cuisine and tranquil atmosphere, which makes it the perfect retreat for anyone seeking relaxation in luxurious surroundings.
Previous guests also highlight the activities and facilities for children, making it an ideal destination for families.
During my stay at the 👉 Sea Dance Resort I was lucky enough to stay in one of the villas with a private pool and it was an absolutely lovely experience.

The villa was spacious and inviting with a small private pool, perfect for a morning dip or relaxing afternoons in the sun.
The staff were also very nice and created a really pleasant atmosphere in the hotel – it’s definitely the perfect place to relax and enjoy your vacation.

Find more photos and bookings here. 👈
The hotel is on its own small beach, and there is no town in the immediate vicinity – you have to walk about 200-300 meters to the main street where there is a 7/11 and a few restaurants.
If you continue walking for about 10-15 minutes, you will reach Choeng Mon beach itself.
The 👉 Melati Beach Resort & Spa, which is located directly on the beach, is a rather luxurious hotel that can be booked at a surprisingly good price.

An atmosphere of peace and privacy awaits you here, complemented by a state-of-the-art spa center where you can enjoy relaxing treatments.
The resort’s location on a quiet bay means that you can enjoy the beach almost to yourself.

There are both regular hotel rooms and private pool villas. The Melati Beach Resort & Spa is a great place to stay on Koh Samui for those looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation with a personal touch, but without the price tag.
2. Bophut (Fisherman’s Village) – Best area for families with children
Bophut, also known as Fisherman’s Village, is a charming blend of traditional Thai culture and modern amenities. It is ideal for families and couples looking for a cozy base on their trip to Koh Samui.
The district is characterized by its unique atmosphere, where old wooden houses along the narrow street tell stories of times gone by and are now home to trendy stores, restaurants and cafés.
See the best hotels in Bophut here. 👈
One of Bophut’s biggest attractions is the popular night market, where the main street is transformed into a vibrant market.
Here you can experience everything from live music and street performances to countless stalls selling local handicrafts, clothing and, last but not least, street food that will tantalize your taste buds with authentic Thai flavours.
The first time I visited Samui, I stayed here in Bophut and it made a great base. It was an excellent place to stay as a first-time visitor.

Bophut beach is more relaxed than many other beaches on Koh Samui. It is the perfect place for anyone who wants to relax under palm trees or enjoy water sports in peace.
The water here is ideal for swimming and the soft sandy bottom makes it particularly child-friendly.
Best places to stay in Bophut
Bophut is one of the most popular vacation destinations on Samui, so there are hotels in all price ranges. Let’s take a look at three good hotels in Bophut in different price categories.
The 👉 Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort is an exceptionally luxurious hotel right on the beach in Bophut.

This resort offers an impressive combination of elegant rooms, suites and villas designed with an eye for Thai aesthetics and comfort.

Guests can enjoy the resort’s spectacular infinity pool, which seems to melt into the horizon of the sea, as well as the award-winning Anantara Spa.
The Anantara Bophut is a dream hotel for anyone looking for a vacation in luxury and style.
The 👉 Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach is a favorite with families who appreciate a relaxed vacation with easy access to everything.

The hotel offers a wide range of family-friendly activities and facilities, including a kids’ club and a large pool that is safe and fun for children.

👉 The Waterfront Hotel at Fisherman’s Village is an excellent choice for travelers looking for affordable yet charming accommodation.

This hotel offers cozy bungalows right on the beach and a beautiful pool for a welcome cool-down on hot days.
Guests particularly appreciate the personal service and family atmosphere for which the hotel is known.

The hotel’s good value for money and beautiful sea views are often highlighted in the reviews, making The Waterfront a popular choice for couples and solo travelers.
3. Chaweng – The liveliest tourist town on Samui
Chaweng is the place on Koh Samui where everything happens. Imagine a place where you can experience everything from sunrise to sunset and well into the night.

It’s perfect for you if you’re young or young at heart and enjoy immersing yourself in a world of entertainment, shopping and beach life.
If you’ve traveled to Thailand, Chaweng may remind you a little of other lively tourist spots like Ao Nang in Krabi and Patong in Phuket, but it still has a charm all of its own.
Find the best hotels in Chaweng here. 👈
The beach here is fantastic – white sand and turquoise waters where you can relax all day. And if you’re interested in activities, you can take part in a variety of water sports.
But Chaweng is not just about daytime. When the sun goes down, the town becomes even more charming with a plethora of restaurants, bars and nightclubs that keep the party going deep into the night.
In Chaweng you’ll find everything from budget hostels, perfect for backpackers, to luxury resorts – whatever your budget, you’ll find it here.

With so much hustle and bustle, Chaweng can also be a bit overwhelming if you are looking for peace and quiet.
So if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, it might be a good idea to visit some of the other areas of the island.
It’s a great place to stay if you want to experience Koh Samui from its energetic side, with all the opportunities for fun, partying and color that entails.
Best places to stay in Chaweng
As the largest vacation resort on Koh Samui, there are of course many hotels in Chaweng. Here are my favorites.
The 👉 SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort is a luxury hotel that offers the best conditions for a true dream vacation on Koh Samui.

This stunning resort offers modern design rooms and private villas, some with direct access to the pool or even with their own pool, for the ultimate luxury experience.
Guests are treated to the resort’s state-of-the-art facilities, including a beachfront pool, a modern fitness center and a soothing spa area.

Previous guests highlight the resort’s unrivaled service and location on beautiful Chaweng Beach, making it a perfect choice for those seeking exclusivity and relaxation.
The 👉 Buri Rasa Village Samui combines the charm of a traditional Thai village resort with modern comfort and elegance.

The hotel is located directly on Chaweng Beach, where a tranquil atmosphere with beautiful architecture and lush, tropical gardens prevails.

The perfect accommodation for young travelers – there are even shared dormitories if you want to stay particularly cheaply.
4. Lamai – A more relaxed tourist area with a great beach
Lamai is like Chaweng’s laid-back little sister.

Here you’ll find a wonderful mix of lively and relaxed life, making Lamai the perfect place on Koh Samui if you’re looking for a little more peace and quiet without sacrificing great experiences.
The beach here easily rivals that of Chaweng, some would even say beats it – think softer sand and crystal clear waters that invite long days in the sun.
See the best hotels in Lamai here. 👈
Even if Lamai is a little more relaxed, nothing is missing here.
The city still offers a vibrant nightlife with a variety of bars and nightclubs where you can enjoy cool drinks and music.
Although it is the second most popular vacation area on Koh Samui, it has retained a certain charm.
Here you have the feeling of living in a local community, with small stores and markets where you can find everything from handmade crafts to fresh tropical fruit.

For those looking for a little more space to breathe and relax, but still want easy access to entertainment and activities, Lamai is a good choice.
Here you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the beautiful, peaceful beach during the day and the lively nightlife at nightfall.
Lamai is not a hidden gem without tourists, but a place where you can feel a little away from the hustle and bustle, but still right in the middle of it all.
Best places to stay in Lamai
As one of the most popular vacation regions on Koh Samui, there is a large selection of hotels – and the hotels in Lamai are generally a little cheaper than in Chaweng.
The 👉 Silavadee Pool Spa Resort is the epitome of luxury and seclusion. Located just outside the town of Lamai, it conveys a sense of exclusivity and tranquillity.

This hotel is truly unique!
This impressive resort is known for its spacious villas and rooms, many with private pools and breathtaking sea views.
Guests can enjoy ultimate relaxation in the resort’s world-class spa, gourmet meals in the fine dining restaurants or relax by one of the spectacular infinity pools.

The 👉 Lamai Samui is a charming resort that offers an authentic and luxurious beach vacation experience.

Facilities such as a magnificent pool area, an exquisite beachfront restaurant and a relaxing spa center contribute to a sense of well-being and renewal.

Guest reviews often highlight the resort’s friendly staff, beautiful location and ability to provide a sense of privacy and exclusivity, making it an ideal choice for couples and families looking for a relaxing vacation by the sea.
The 👉 Crystal Lamai Hotel is an excellent choice for anyone looking for affordable accommodation in the heart of Lamai.

This hotel offers comfortable and clean rooms at an affordable price without compromising on location – just a stone’s throw from Lamai Beach and close to the city’s many attractions.

See more photos and book here. 👈
The facilities are simple, but sufficient for guests who primarily want to explore the island and enjoy beach life.
Previous guests particularly appreciate the good value for money, the central location and the hotel’s friendly service.
A good hotel in Lamai for those who want to stay affordable and don’t need a lot of luxury.
5. Mae Nam – Impressive sandy beach in tranquil surroundings
Mae Nam is the place on Koh Samui where you can really slow down and enjoy island life at a relaxed pace.

Located on the north coast of the island, you will find a quiet beach with soft sand and swaying palm trees – an idyllic setting that is perfect for relaxing days in the sun.
What makes Mae Nam particularly attractive is its relaxed atmosphere, which sets it apart from the busier tourist areas of the island.
See the best hotels in Mae Nam here 👈
Here you will find a nice mix of small, cozy cafés, local restaurants and beach bars where you can enjoy freshly caught fish and seafood as well as other culinary experiences without feeling (too) overwhelmed by tourist traps.
Although Mae Nam is a quieter corner of Koh Samui, that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of things to do.
In addition to the wonderful swimming opportunities, the area offers everything from yoga and spa treatments to golf on one of the island’s most renowned courses.

Mae Nam is the perfect place for anyone who wants to experience Koh Samui in an authentic way away from the crowds.
Of course, there are always other tourists – after all, Koh Samui is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the whole of Thailand.
The area is ideal for families, couples and solo travelers who appreciate nature and tranquillity but still want easy access to the island’s facilities and attractions.
Best places to stay in Mae Nam
Mae Nam is a rather atypical area on Koh Samui compared to the other places I have mentioned in this guide, but there are still all kinds of accommodations.
Here are some of my favorite hotels in Mae Nam on the northern tip of Koh Samui.
The 👉 Santiburi Koh Samui is a true jewel among luxury hotels on tranquil Mae Nam Beach.

This resort offers an exclusive experience with its spacious and elegantly furnished villas and suites, many of which have direct access to the private beach.

Here you can enjoy a range of activities, including golf on the resort’s own golf course, water sports and pampering in the luxurious spa.
The Santiburi Koh Samui is repeatedly praised in reviews for its exceptional service, idyllic location and attention to detail, which make for an unforgettable vacation.
👉 The Flow Samui Beach Resort is a great place to stay if you want a charming and affordable vacation in Mae Nam.

The rooms are comfortably and modernly furnished and have all the necessary amenities for a pleasant stay.

The complex has a beautiful pool and direct access to a quiet part of Mae Nam Beach, where you can enjoy the sun and the sea.
In the reviews, The Flow Samui is often praised for its good value for money, the beautiful location and the helpful staff.
👉 The Paradise Beach Resort Samui in Mae Nam is a good choice for anyone looking for a more affordable hotel on the beach.

This resort offers charming bungalows right on the beach, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation that creates a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.

See more photos and book here. 👈
Despite the surprisingly low price, the reviews emphasize the clean and well-kept facilities, the excellent location on the beach and the friendly staff.
Paradise Beach Resort Samui is the perfect place for those who want to wake up to the sound of the waves without breaking the bank.
Where should you not stay in Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand and should therefore be taken into consideration when looking for the best place to stay.
However, it can happen that you book a hotel in a less ideal area.
It’s not that there are dangerous areas on Koh Samui – it’s an extremely safe place for tourists (like the rest of Thailand). My point here is more about convenience.
You should make sure that you don’t live in a bad area where it’s far to the beach, restaurants or other activities, for example.
Here are a few specific areas that I think you should avoid on Koh Samui:
Nathon
As the island’s main ferry port, Nathon is more of a commercial center than a vacation destination. It lacks the high-quality beaches and tourist facilities that most people look for on a beach vacation.
By the way, if you arrive on Koh Samui by ferry, I can recommend the company Lomprayah.
Taling Ngam
This area is known for its natural beauty and fantastic sunsets, but is quite isolated compared to the livelier areas of the island, making it less ideal for those wanting to explore the wide range of Koh Samui has to offer.
Taling Ngam is located in the southwestern part of Koh Samui, and most of the “normal” tourist areas are located in the northeastern part of the island.
I hope you have found this guide useful and that you now have a good overview of the different areas of this popular Thai vacation island.
If you are still unsure where to stay on Koh Samui, please feel free to leave a comment.

Frequently asked questions:
What is the best area on Koh Samui?
Lamai could be the place for you if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere with cozy cafés and fewer crowds.
Choeng Mon or Bophut with its charming Fisherman’s Village is ideal for those seeking luxurious relaxation and tranquillity. Mae Nam is perfect for families or couples looking for a quiet beach vacation with the opportunity to experience authentic Thai culture.
Where is the best beach on Samui?
Koh Samui has many beautiful beaches, but the best one can vary depending on personal preference. Chaweng Beach is the most popular because of its fine white sand and crystal clear water, but it is also the most crowded.
Mae Nam Beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere for families or those seeking peace and quiet. Lamai Beach is a good choice for those looking for a balance between lively activities and relaxation.
Is Chaweng or Lamai Beach better?
The choice between Chaweng and Lamai Beach again depends on your personal preferences. Chaweng Beach is for those looking for a lively beach scene with plenty of water sports, shopping and nightlife options.
Lamai Beach has a more relaxed atmosphere, but still offers a good selection of restaurants and bars and some of the best natural attractions on the island in close proximity. Both beaches have beautiful clear water and fine sand, so you can’t go wrong with either beach. My favorite is Lamai as I like the more laid back atmosphere.
