If you’re looking for where to stay in Ljubljana, then you’ve come to the right place!
I am delighted to introduce you to the picturesque nooks and charming crannies of Ljubljana, the enchanting capital of Slovenia, in this lively tapestry of words. Don’t be fooled by the compact size of this fairytale city; its charm is inversely proportional to its footprint. Choosing the perfect place to hang your hat may not be as labyrinthine as in other European capitals, but the subtle differences between the picturesque neighborhoods are worth discovering.
Imagine Ljubljana, a charming capital city in miniature, a city where no destination is too far away and the beating heart of the city always seems to be just around the next cobbled corner. There’s really no need to bother with public transport, unless you prefer to nestle in the distant suburbs.
Let me give you a first impression: The city center, bursting with life and history, is the safest place for your temporary domicile. It is a fascinating mix of the modern cityscape on one side of the river and the time-honored old town on the other, nestled comfortably at the foot of the castle hill.
In the popularity contest, the Old Town, the modern center and Poljane are the well-heeled districts, while Koseze, Trnovo, Krakovo and Metelkova offer more budget options.
Many will praise Ljubljana as one of the most affordable capitals in Europe. I disagree. It’s true that the outskirts are easy on the wallet, but the city center can surprise you with its high prices.
And now for the accommodation. During the frosty winter months, you’re likely to stumble across some real bargains. But when the snow melts, don’t expect a miracle unless you booked your stay when the last winter flakes were still falling.
Like a jewel in a jeweler’s showcase, the town’s allure makes it a coveted property. With limited rooms at the inn and an ever-growing list of admirers, it pays to plan ahead.
When I arrived in Ljubljana in spring, the bustling city center was already empty. As the prices are usually over 150 euros per night, I settled in the quiet Koseze district.
And now buckle up, because I’m going to plunge headfirst into the glittering sea of details. Here are the 7 best places to stay in Ljubljana.
Where to stay in Ljubljana: Best areas 👇
1. The city center of Ljubljana, the best area for a luxurious stay in Ljubljana

The city center of Ljubljana stretches along the right bank of the Ljubljanica River, with the lively Preseren Square as its centerpiece, surrounded by the emerald green Tivoli Park and the central hub of train and bus transport.
This district is a living, breathing work of art, where historical monuments and modern architectural marvels come together and wide boulevards merge into labyrinthine alleyways.
Think of it as the vibrant commercial heart of the city, teeming with services and cultural offerings. A variety of restaurants, bars and cozy cafés are waiting to satisfy your culinary curiosity – a veritable buffet of experiences and choices.
The prime location is like a secret ingredient for your perfect vacation stew. Every city landmark is within easy walking distance, and the historic old town and castle are just a river crossing away over one of the city’s signature bridges.
The close proximity of the train and bus stations makes it easy to get here by train, bus or plane (the airport bus stops here).
The heart of this lively district is the charming Prešeren Square with the striking red façade of the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the famous triple bridge that connects the modern center with the old town.
Ljubljana really is a city of bridges. You will probably discover and photograph the Butcher’s Bridge, the Dragon Bridge and the Shoemaker’s Bridge, all of which have their own story to tell, during a walk.
Don’t miss Congress Square, which offers a breathtaking view of the castle and is home to the baroque Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity, the casino and the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Republic Square, the largest square in the city and the proud birthplace of Slovenian independence, offers a contrasting architectural experience. Here you will find the National Assembly and the colossal Cankar Hall congress center.
The city center is a treasure trove of cultural offerings, especially an impressive number of museums. The City Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery, the Slovenian National Museum and the Museum of Natural History are all well worth a visit. And the best part? They are all just a short walk away from each other.
An absolute must is the Neboticnik of Ljubljana (the skyscraper). This skyscraper has a rooftop bar that offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the castle and the city skyline.
If you fancy a shopping spree, you will find numerous stores in the streets of the modern center, such as the popular Čop Street, which ends at Preseren Square, where the Emporium Gallery shopping center is located.
In Riverside you will find the culinary heart of the city, a variety of bars and restaurants, especially along the route from Preseren Square to Dragon Bridge.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that this district offers the widest choice of accommodation, from posh hotels to cozy Airbnbs. As it’s a very popular district next to the Old Town, prices tend to be a little higher, so booking early is key.

2. The old town, where you spend the night for the first time in Ljubljana

The historic old town of Ljubljana lies on the opposite bank of the river from the city center, at the foot of the hill on which the imposing fortress is located. Many of the city’s famous sights can be found in this small but densely populated district.
Imagine a pedestrian paradise adorned by enchanting Austro-Hungarian buildings, charming cobblestone streets, picturesque squares, boutiques, friendly cafés and appetizing restaurants. It’s like stepping into an open-air museum that is both lively and tranquil.
Start your exploration tour by crossing the famous Triple Bridge from Preseren Square. This trio of bridges is a landmark of the city and connects the modern center and the old town like a beautifully embroidered patchwork.
Ljubljana Castle in particular demands your attention. It houses several museums and exhibitions and, with its mighty walls and highest tower, offers an unbeatable panoramic view of the city and the old town in particular. It’s like stepping into a postcard scene. You can walk up on foot or take a leisurely ride on the funicular.
After the castle tour, stroll down to one end of the old town and walk along the main street, which is called Stari trg in one part and Mestni trg in the other. This street is adorned with elegant buildings, but also with interesting and quirky little stores.
St. Nicholas Cathedral is a sight not to be missed. Its eye-catching bronze doors, decorated with bas-reliefs and small sculptures, invite you to enter the impressive interior.
Right next to the cathedral is the square with the town hall and the Three Rivers Fountain, which leads to the central market.
The Central Market is a feast for the senses, with numerous vendors selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to textiles and memorable souvenirs. You might even pick up some local delicacies such as honey liqueur at cheaper prices than elsewhere in the city.
The riverside deserves a special mention. With its numerous bars and restaurants offering ideal terraces for a romantic dinner, it is a piece of the heart of Ljubljana.
The Old Town is undoubtedly the city’s most enchanting quarter, a storybook come to life.
The accommodation options are as varied as a painter’s palette and include apartments, guesthouses, inns and hotels of all standards. Similar to the city center, some of the highest prices in the city are charged here, so it is highly advisable to secure a place early.

3. Poljane: Affordable stay in the heart of Ljubljana

If you’re looking for a place in Ljubljana where you can rest your weary head without breaking the bank and still stay within reach of the pulse of the city, Poljane is your ace in the hole. It is directly adjacent to the historic old town and stretches from the edges of the central market to the valley station of the Burgbahn cable car.
This predominantly residential neighborhood may lack the glamour of the famous sights, but don’t let that fool you. Like an unassuming book hiding exciting stories, Poljane offers peace, comfort and charm. It is just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, making it an unsung hero of convenience.
The beauty of Poljane lies in its practicality and versatility. With a range of accommodation, including budget options and a handful of hostels, it’s a haven for backpackers and those with a youthful sense of exploration.
However, finding a free room in Poljane during peak tourist months can be as difficult as spotting a unicorn in the city park. So if you are interested in this inexpensive, centrally located district, you should try to find accommodation in good time.

4. Metelkova, the best area for nightlife in Ljubljana

Just a ten-minute walk from the heart of Ljubljana, it’s like stepping down a rabbit hole that leads to another universe. Welcome to Metelkova, a vibrant neighborhood where street art, strange sculptures, squatters, hippies, artists and designers create a rich picture of life that boldly defies the mainstream.
The history of Metelkova, which was built in 1882 as an Austro-Hungarian military barracks, is as captivating as a thrilling novel. It later became the headquarters and central prison of the Yugoslavian army until Slovenia became independent in 1991.
The turning point came in 1993, when squatters, intellectuals and artists breathed new life into the abandoned site and its seven buildings. This was the birth of the country’s most important artistic bohemia, as vibrant as a peacock’s plumage in all its glory.
Armed with creativity and zest for action, they transformed the place into a visual feast. With its vibrant murals, graffiti and unusual sculptures, it is a fascinating playground for anyone with a passion for contemporary art and counterculture.
Today, these buildings house accommodation, dance and music studios, galleries and workshops where a thriving artistic spirit pulsates. The nearby Metelkova Street, after which the district is named, was officially recognized as part of Slovenia’s national cultural heritage in 2005.
The square, where the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Ethnographic Museum are located, underlines the cultural appeal of this district. Metelkova is not only an art and culture mecca, however, but also a stronghold of alternative nightlife with a number of bars and clubs catering to those looking for something different from the norm.
In terms of location, Metelkova is an interesting choice for accommodation in Ljubljana. The train station is just a stone’s throw away, and the city center (Preseren Square) can be reached in about 15 minutes.
There are a number of hotels and apartments in the area, and the full range of accommodation in the city center is just a short walk away. The more adventurous can even take a nap in the cells of the former prison, which has now been converted into a hostel – a truly unique experience.

5. Krakovo: Quiet accommodation near the center of Ljubljana with children

Located south of the city center, Krakovo has a rich history dating back to the mid-13th century. This modest neighborhood, originally located outside the old city walls, was a humble fishing village. Only its inhabitants had the unique privilege of fishing and supplying the city with their daily catch. Today it is revered as one of the oldest corners of Ljubljana.
Krakovo is a vibrant tapestry of tranquillity, a garden-filled residential area where small, flowering vegetable patches adorn the landscape, their fruits destined for the local market. It’s a neighborhood whose quiet charm is as enticing as a hidden treasure chest waiting to be discovered.
The nostalgic charm of the district runs through the many medieval country houses, stores, cafés and restaurants. A small, winding canal meanders through the heart of the district, giving Krakovo an irresistible village-in-the-city atmosphere.
As the sun sets, Krakovo subtly transforms and the picturesque serenity of the day gives way to a cozy nocturnal charm. Local bars and restaurants come to life, serving a tantalizing selection of regional dishes that are a dream come true for any palate. Despite its proximity to the vibrant city center, the place is off the beaten track, which adds to its appeal.
I’ll let you in on a little secret: visit Eipprova Ulica, a picturesque street that runs parallel to the neighborhood’s canal. It’s a gem cherished by locals, a hidden niche teeming with bars and restaurants whose prices are as comforting as a warm, cozy blanket on a cold night.
As it is primarily a residential area, accommodation options in Krakovo are rather limited. However, there is a tempting selection of private rental apartments, Airbnbs, guesthouses and a handful of boutique hotels. Think of it as a quiet, quaint getaway in the heart of the city. Here, peace meets comfort, a perfect choice for anyone looking for a central yet quiet stay in Ljubljana.

6. Trnovo, the best area to stay in Ljubljana like a local

Let me introduce you to Trnovo – a neighborhood on the edge of the city center, nestled between Krakovo and the meandering Ljubljanica River. In my travel guide, Trnovo is like a pulsating B-side track on an album – often overlooked, but really worth a listen.
Its personality has changed dramatically since the 1970s. Once an idyllic rural village, Trnovo is now a diverse landscape of residential and commercial buildings, symbolizing the transition to a suburban utopia. Nevertheless, it has retained a quiet charm that combines wonderfully with the cocktail of restaurants, bars and youthful student life.
Although Trnovo may not be at the top of the list of places to visit, it does have an ace up its sleeve: the former home and studio (now a museum) of world-famous architect Jože Plečnik. It’s like stepping into a time capsule of design. Plečnik, the genius behind the modern Trnovo Bridge and the iconic Triple Bridge, has left an indelible mark on Ljubljana’s architectural DNA. His former home now houses a wealth of his groundbreaking designs.
You can also visit the Trnovo Church and the KUD France Prešeren Gallery, both of which have a unique cultural character.
When choosing a place to stay in Ljubljana, Trnovo might not be your first look. But if the more touristy areas are overcrowded, you should give Trnovo a chance. It may look a bit far from the city center on the map, but rest assured it’s a manageable excursion.
What’s more, the city offers a warm, welcoming hand with accommodation that is easy on the wallet. It’s a modest accommodation scene that includes a few hotels and a fair share of apartments. So why not choose Trnovo, the neighborhood with unique charm, as your second home in Ljubljana?

7. Koseze: Ljubljana’s affordable refuge

Next on my list is Koseze, a neighborhood located 1.5 km northwest of Ljubljana’s old city center. Think of Koseze as a modest bistro on a side street, a little off the beaten track but well worth the detour.
If I were to rank the neighborhoods according to their proximity to the pulse of the city, Koseze would be last. But hey, isn’t there an unsung beauty in being the underdog? This is especially true if you visit the city during the high season. When the central areas are bursting at the seams, Koseze comes to the rescue, a welcome harbor in the storm of tourists – believe me, I’ve been there.
During my visit, I was surprised by the hustle and bustle of the city center and ended up booking a room in Koseze. From my hotel, a leisurely 25-minute walk (or a quick cab ride for 5-7 euros) took me to the lively Perseren Square.
And I can tell you that the journey there is no less beautiful than the destination. Koseze is bordered to the south by the lush Tivoli Park, which invites you to stroll through its green expanses and turn your commute into an excursion into nature.
And let me tell you that the journey is no less beautiful than the destination. Koseze borders the lush Tivoli Park to the south and invites you to stroll through its green expanse and turn your commute into an excursion into nature.
When it comes to tranquillity, Koseze has a lot to offer compared to the bustling old town or city center. Imagine this: pristine parks, manicured gardens, walking trails, outdoor fitness equipment and child-friendly playgrounds.
The cherry on the cake? Ljubljana Zoo is located on the southern edge of Tivoli Park and offers another unique experience for your trip.
Even though Koseze consists mainly of residential areas, it is not a desert. Supermarkets, bars, cafés and restaurants are plentiful in the area and offer a taste of local life at far more affordable prices than the river region.
The range of accommodation is modest, but still very varied: Airbnb, B&B, guesthouses, apartments and some hotels. A little secret: the accommodation in Koseze is much cheaper than that in the city center. So if your travel budget is tighter than a new pair of shoes, Koseze could be just the place for you.
