Where to stay in Madeira: Best areas and places 🇵🇹

Madeira Island is located between Portugal and the northwest coast of Africa and is the largest island in the Portuguese archipelago. While the rest of Europe struggles with cold winters, Madeira has great weather all year round! The island offers dramatic cliffs, volcanic rock pools, lush UNESCO forests, great levada walks and incredible hiking trails. When it comes to where to stay in Madeira, there are a lot of different regions. In this article, I will help you decide on a region and find the best accommodation in that region on Madeira Island.

This article is divided into eight different regions of Madeira Island, and for each region I have picked out the best luxury hotels, family hotels and budget accommodation to help you decide which region and accommodation is best for you. After spending more than three months on the island, I’ve learned what each region has to offer and what type of traveler should stay where.

Before I get into the article, I just want to tell you that the 👉 Les Suites at Cliff Bay is by far my favorite place to stay in Madeira.

REGION: FUNCHAL

Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is located on the southwest coast of the island and is home to several luxury hotels, fabulous museums, old churches and green botanical gardens. Most visitors come here because there are many restaurants, bars and travel agencies in the traditional streets of the old town. You will find a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets.

I spent a whole month in Funchal and it’s a perfect mix of culture, food and history as well as being a central base for day trips with or without a car.

1. LES SUITES AT CLIFF BAY PORTOBAY

👉 The Cliff Bay – PortoBay (Luxury): This ultra-luxurious hotel sits proudly above the cliffs with a breathtaking viewpoint. The Cliff Bay features a wide range of luxurious and spacious rooms, 3 saltwater swimming pools, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a spa and several on-site restaurants and bars.

Guests can enjoy the hotel’s afternoon tea indoors or on the terrace while taking in the spectacular views of the south coast of Madeira Island. The spa also offers a variety of treatments, from Turkish steam baths to hair treatments. 5. CASA BRANCA APARTMENTS

👉 Casa Branca Apartments (Where I stayed): I stayed at Casa Branca Apartments for two months at the end of my six-month stay in Madeira. For me, this is the perfect location in Madeira. Cafes, bars and everything in the old town of Funchal were within walking distance, but still far enough away from the city center to have peace and quiet.

The apartment has its own parking space (very valuable in Funchal) and is only a few minutes from the highway, so you can get in and out quickly, unlike directly in Funchal – a great starting point.

It is a very modern complex with three floors, all of which have self-contained apartments. I stayed on the second and third floors for a month each. The decor is very modern and spacious, with fancy amenities like coffee machines, a toaster, a huge TV with Netflix, a table and chair for working and a large bathroom. The best thing about the apartment was the huge window, which basically takes up an entire wall and overlooks Funchal all the way to the mountains. This is where I did all my weather forecasting as I could see half the island.

6. GOLDEN RESIDENCE HOTEL

7. 29 MADEIRA HOSTEL & GUESTHOUSE

👉 29 Madeira Hostel & Guest House (Budget): This is one of the most popular budget accommodations in Funchal for adults. If you are traveling on a budget, you should consider this hostel. The 29 Madeira Hostel is right in the center of the action. You can take a private double room or a bunk bed in a mixed dormitory that can accommodate up to 8 guests.

Each bunk bed has a built-in locker and is equipped with a power socket and a lamp. The hostel has a communal area where you can meet up with other guests or just chill out. A light breakfast is included in the price, but there is also a furnished kitchen where you can prepare your own meals.

Free towels, Wi-Fi and hairdryers are a nice service. There is also a laundry service, electricity adapters and a left-luggage office. Another special feature is that guests can play chess and cards with other guests. Without a doubt, this is the best budget accommodation in Funchal.

REGION: CALHETA

Calheta is popular with tourists and families because it is on the sunny side of the island. Here in Calheta you will find one of the few sandy beaches, and even when it rains in other parts of the island, it is usually sunny in Calheta. There are many activities on offer such as snorkeling, canoeing, windsurfing, paragliding and much more.

Calheta is the island’s most important center for banana plantations, vineyards and sugar cane cultivation. Calheta is also known for its beautiful sunsets and hiking trails. I stayed in Calheta during my first five weeks in Madeira and enjoyed the daily dose of sunshine. It was a good starting point for all the hikes and viewpoints in the center and west of the island.

8. SAVOY SACCHARUM RESORT & SPA

👉 Savoy Saccharum Resort & Spa (Luxury): If your idea of a dream accommodation is sleeping in a spacious and luxurious room with stunning ocean views, then the Saccharum is the place for you! This cane-inspired hotel has a wide range of well-appointed rooms with everything you need, including a balcony.

It has a wellness center, a mini-museum about the sugar cane industry, beaches and jetties, a restaurant and swimming pools. But perhaps the best part is the rooftop pool, where guests can float into the horizon and take photos for their Instagram posts.

There is also a rooftop bar that serves a variety of drinks and offers a breathtaking view of the sunset. At the Savoy Saccharum Resort, guests can enjoy their complimentary breakfast on the terrace. This is another great place in Madeira for couples and families.

The guest house was built from recycled glass and wood, so it does a great job in terms of sustainability!

There is a large selection of rooms, including suites. All rooms are beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you need. On arrival you will be greeted with a basket of fresh fruit and eggs from their own farm. There is a kitchen, a garden with lots of flowers and fruit trees and plenty of seating.

11. CALHETA BOUTIQUE HOUSES

👉 Calheta Boutique Houses (WHERE I STAYED): A perfect view of Calheta from the outdoor pool or from your room is not the only thing the Calheta Boutique Houses offer their guests, but even more. They offer one and two bedroom houses equipped with everything you need. In fact, it’s your home away from home.

What I love about this place is the homely feel and the attention to detail. After a long day of exploring, you can relax by the pool and enjoy the view of the mountains. Amenities include free Wi-Fi and parking, a terrace and a garden. Each unit has modern furniture, a washing machine, a well-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and much more. The tranquil location is an ideal base for hiking and exploring the western and central areas of the island.

12. MARINA ROOMS

👉 Marina Rooms (Budget): If you are looking for budget accommodation in Calheta, you should check out Marina Rooms. This guest house, located right on the harbor and dotted with boats, offers double and standard rooms. Each room has a sliding door that leads to a spacious balcony from which you have the best view of the marina. The location is perfect as it is just a stone’s throw away from everything, including supermarkets and restaurants. Each room is spacious and has a TV, mini fridge, kettle, closet, large bathroom and desk.

REGION:MACHICO

The Machico region is very popular with beach lovers and families, as it is home to Praia de Machico, the most famous “sandy beach” on the entire island of Madeira. It is also close to the airport and offers easy access to public transport. Whale watching, beach walks, hikes to the levadas and coastal walks such as the famous Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço are just some of the well-known activities in this region.

There is also an abundance of fantastic seafood dishes in the region’s restaurants. Sao Roque beach is a wide black sand beach, while Banda D’ Alem beach is a yellow sand beach in Machico, so you have plenty of beach options in this region. Machico is a great place to stay in Madeira if you want to be close to Funchal in the east of the island and are looking for sun but not the busy atmosphere of a city like Funchal.

13. DOM PEDRO MADEIRA

👉 Dom Pedro Madeira(Family/Luxury): This luxury hotel has a fantastic location right on the black sand beach of Machico and is also not far from the airport. It offers a wide range of rooms, including family rooms, suites and club rooms. All rooms are equipped with a TV, air conditioning, a bathtub and a desk, and some rooms have a balcony.

The hotel has a large saltwater pool with plenty of sun loungers right by the sea. You won’t be bored here, as the hotel offers several outdoor activities such as snorkeling and windsurfing. The hotel has a buffet restaurant, a pool bar and a piano bar that provides good entertainment every evening. Without a doubt, the Dom Pedro Madeira is the best accommodation in Machico.

14. AMPARO

👉 Amparo (Family Pick): If you’re looking for budget accommodation in a central location for your family in Machico, the Amparo is a family-run hotel offering a large triple room with a flat-screen TV, en suite bathroom, tea/coffee making facilities and a balcony. There is a bus stop, beach and parking lot nearby, making it very convenient.

The hotel has a 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi, a terrace and a lovely restaurant serving local dishes. The highlight, however, are the courteous hosts who do everything they can to make your stay as pleasant and memorable as possible. A delicious breakfast is included in the price, making the hotel good value for money and a family-friendly place to stay in Madeira.

If you need cash, there is an ATM on site. You can also take advantage of the laundry and car rental services. In addition to the convenient location, another highlight of this hotel is the delicious complimentary breakfast.

16. MODERN & RECYCLED GUEST HOUSE

👉 Modern & Recycled Guest House (Budget): One of the benefits of staying in Machico is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the city, unless you stay at the Modern & Recycled Guest House. The location is excellent, very close to the beach, restaurants and surrounding stores. The rooms are built from recycled materials yet are stylish and clean with different themes. All rooms have a good shower and TV. The Route 66 room was probably the coolest of all the rooms. The beds have wheels and the ceiling light was made from a recycled car tire. I love the attention to detail and the personal touch. There is also a cozy co-working area that guests can use and a beautiful terrace. The fully equipped kitchen is available to all guests. Although it is a hostel only, families are also welcome.

REGION: SANTA CRUZ

You will also find many incredible views and places to swim and relax in the municipality of Sta. Cruz. If Brazil has the Christ of Salvation, Santa Cruz has the Cristo Rei de Garajau viewpoint. The best thing about this small coastal town is its proximity to the airport, Funchal and its hidden beaches. Families and business travelers will love this place, as it offers a water park for children and a golf course.

17. ALBATROZ BEACH & YACHT CLUB

👉 Albatroz Beach & Yacht Club (luxury): This is by far the best luxury boutique hotel in Santa Cruz. The Albatroz Beach & Yacht Club is strategically located on a headland with private beach access. It offers a wide range of luxurious rooms and suites with balconies that offer the best views of the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel rooms are huge and feature Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, en-suite bathrooms with double sinks and much more.

The suite has a separate dining room. There is a tennis court, a library, a restaurant and bar, a gym, a garden and magnificent swimming pools by the sea and on the rocks. The hotel’s location steals the show, as it is close to the airport and guests can take advantage of the free shuttle service. With professional service and first-class amenities, this luxury hotel on Madeira Island really does offer everything you need and is one of the best places to stay in Madeira.

REGION: PONTA DO SOL

Ponta do Sol is located on the southwest coast of Madeira Island and is a small coastal town in the sunny part of the island with pebble beaches. Ponta do Sol literally means “the point of the sun” and that’s exactly what you get here. Even when the rest of the island is in the grip of a storm, it’s almost always sunny in Ponta do Sol.

There are many fantastic walks in the Rabcal area in the interior of the island. This region is popular for its dramatic cliff walk along the coast, stunning coastal views and sunny weather. If you are considering where to stay in Madeira and want a sunny vacation, this is the place for you.

20. PONTA DO SOL INN

👉 Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol (Luxury): I have stayed here! If a breathtaking view of the ocean, comfort and professional service are your top priorities when choosing accommodation, then you should stay at Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this trendy boutique hotel is a stunning retreat with plenty of sunshine. It offers minimalist rooms with comfortable beds, flat-screen TVs, floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies.

My favorite features were the incredible outdoor infinity pool and jacuzzi overlooking the sea and the town of Ponta do Sol – very impressive! There is an on-site spa and wellness center where guests can pamper themselves and a tennis court just a stone’s throw from the resort. In addition, pets are allowed, parking is free, and there is Wi-Fi everywhere. This hotel comes highly recommended and is one of the most unique and luxurious accommodations in Madeira.

REGION: SEA GARDEN

Jardim Do Mar is located in the southwest of Madeira Island and is a picturesque coastal village known for its quiet pebble beaches. Due to the year-round warm weather, this is one of the best areas on the island. Here you will find luxurious villas perched above the town and offering fantastic views. It is recommended to hire a car if you are going to be in this quiet, traditional village.

23. SOUL GLAMPING
