When I first visited Naples (or Napoli, as it’s called in Italian) on a trip through Italy (to the Amalfi Coast and to Rome), I couldn’t really appreciate the city. It took me some time to understand the true character of Naples, but when it clicked, Naples turned out to be an exciting destination ✨ – it’s just important to book accommodation in the best area to stay in Naples.

The ambience of the city depends greatly on the area you are in. Therefore, it is extremely important to stay in an area that matches the mood you are looking for when traveling to Naples. 📍

The guide to the best areas in Naples continues below, where I also mention my favorite accommodations in the different areas.

1. Centro Storico: The best area for tourists to linger

The Centro Storico (Historical Center) is undoubtedly the best accommodation for tourists visiting Naples who want to experience the charming streets of the city and have the most famous sights nearby.

Neapel

This area is rich in history, culture and architecture. It is an ideal place to stay for tourists for several reasons:

The wealth of history and culture

The Centro Storico is the heart of Naples and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The area is full of historical monuments, churches and buildings from different eras.

When you stay here, you are surrounded by history, from the famous Dome of Naples to the mysterious underground ruins.

Easy access to attractions

If you stay in the Centro Storico, you can reach many of Naples’ most famous sights on foot.

Culinary experiences

Naples is world-famous for its food, and the Centro Storico is a culinary paradise.

There are numerous restaurants, cafés and street kitchens where you can try everything from authentic Neapolitan pizza to local delicacies and sweet treats.

I know it’s a cliché, but the first pizza I ate in Naples blew me away.

Where to stay in Naples Italy 🇮🇹: The 10 Best Areas 6

It’s incredible how much better a classic Neapolitan pizza tastes here compared to what you can find elsewhere.

In fact, I’m currently planning a trip to Rome, which will include a day trip to Naples for pizza.

Lively atmosphere

The Centro Storico is known for its vibrant and lively atmosphere. The streets are full of music, art and people, creating an energetic and festive atmosphere.

This is the perfect place to experience authentic, vibrant Naples, but in a way that still feels safe with other tourists strolling through the streets.

Shopping and markets

There are also several markets and stores in the area where you can buy everything from local handicrafts to modern Italian fashion. This offers a unique shopping experience that combines tradition and modernity.

Most tourists can confidently book their hotel in Naples here in the Centro Storico.

Where to stay in the Centro Storico?

There are many hotels in the center of Naples, but many of them have not been modernized for many years.

Below are some of my favorite hotels that are modern and consistently get good reviews, so you can trust that they are in good condition.

If you want to stay in the heart of Naples with a touch of luxury, then the 👉 Costantinopoli 104 is the ideal choice.

And then there’s even a swimming pool, which is very hard to find here in the city center.

The elegant hotel is housed in a historic neoclassical building that offers a charming atmosphere with its stained glass windows and tastefully furnished rooms.

You will appreciate the quiet outdoor pool – as already mentioned, a rarity in the busy city center.

Perhaps less traditionally Neapolitan

The Porto area is perhaps less traditionally Neapolitan than areas such as the historic center or Chiaia.

Whether this is good or bad depends on whether you like the narrow streets in the center or prefer the slightly wider boulevards here in the Porto area by the port.

It’s a great place to stay in Naples for those who want a slightly different view of Naples, combined with the opportunity to easily explore Naples and its surroundings.

Best places to stay in Porto

During my research for this guide, I was quite surprised at how cheap the hotels in Porto are compared to the prices in Centro Storico and Chiaia.

10. Close to Garibaldi train station – Affordable hotels and easy for day trips

And now I would like to give you my own, perhaps somewhat unconventional, suggestion for an excellent area in Naples – especially for those looking for a cheap hotel.

  • The station is called both Napoli Centrale and Garibaldi.

On my first trip to Naples, I stayed near Garibaldi and it worked really well.

Accommodation near the Garibaldi train station in Naples can be a practical and cost-effective choice, especially if you plan to use public transportation extensively during your stay.

To be fair, I recommend this area for those who, like me, want to save on accommodation costs in Naples.

Convenient transport connections

Where to stay in Naples Italy 🇮🇹: The 10 Best Areas 54

Garibaldi station is the main station in Naples and therefore a central hub for local and regional trains.

Ideal for day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento or even Rome.

From Napoli Garibaldi you can reach Pompeii in less than an hour.

I particularly recommend a visit to Sorrento, which in my opinion is a more exciting town than Amalfi and Positano.

You can take the regional train from Naples to Sorrento in just over an hour.

Affordable hotels

The area around Garibaldi station generally offers cheaper hotels than more expensive areas such as Chiaia or the historic center.

👉 Here you will find the best hotels near Garibaldi.

Near the center

Where to stay in Naples Italy 🇮🇹: The 10 Best Areas 58
The walk from the Garibaldi district to the city center is exciting!

Although Garibaldi station is located outside the historic center, it is still relatively close and can be reached on foot or with a short metro or bus ride.

This makes it easy to reach the many attractions of Naples.

For example, we just walked from our hotel to the center – it was hot there in June, but it was also fun to experience some less touristy streets.

Not the best area for families with children

I always try to be honest in my travel guides and also write about the negative things, so this should also be mentioned.

As it is a transportation hub, the area around Garibaldi station can be noisy and crowded, especially during the day.

Like any other big city, the main train station attracts some shady characters, so it might not be the best place to visit if you’re traveling to Naples with children.

Accommodation near Garibaldi

Around Garibaldi station you will find both ultra-modern luxury hotels and cheaper, simpler accommodation.

I would like to introduce you to some of the most popular accommodations – always with good reviews and in different price categories.

As usual with Ibis hotels, it was a 3-star standard hotel without any problems.

By that I mean that you get what you pay for: affordable accommodation in a fairly modern hotel.

Check-in went smoothly and overall the hotel staff were very friendly, for example when we asked for directions to a small kiosk to buy water and snacks.

The breakfast is classic Italian – but not so much emphasis is placed on breakfast here.

I recommend this hotel if you are traveling to Naples and want to stay in a decent, affordable hotel.

And let’s also take a look at a really affordable hotel in Naples that still gets pretty good reviews.

The 👉 B&B Hotel Napoli is perfect for anyone looking for an affordable yet good hotel near the Garibaldi train station.

The hotel has a roof terrace with a view of Mount Vesuvius.

The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, and the hotel has a rather artistic atmosphere with impressive murals and a relaxing rooftop terrace.

Although some guests have mentioned minor issues with room maintenance and facilities, as well as noise levels, former guests often highlight the value for money and overall comfort of the hotel.

What should you avoid in Naples? 3 areas you should NOT stay in

Where to stay in Naples Italy 🇮🇹: The 10 Best Areas 70

We’ve all heard that things are a little rougher in Naples, and to be honest, compared to places like Milan, Sardinia or even Rome, there’s simply more crime in Naples.

That’s why I’d like to tell you about the areas of Naples where you definitely don’t need to book a hotel.

Scampia
Scampia, located in the northern part of Naples, is known for its reputation as a criminal area with links to drug trafficking and the notorious mafia.

In the past, Scampia has struggled with illegal activities and although efforts have been made to improve the situation, the reputation of the area is still an important factor that visitors should consider.

Scampia also lacks the tourist facilities such as hotels and restaurants that can be found in the better-known districts of Naples.

It is also relatively far from the city’s central tourist attractions, making it less suitable for sightseeing and exploring Naples.

So there is no reason to consider Scampia when traveling to Naples, even if the area has improved in recent years.

The Spanish Quarter

They love Maradona in Naples! Here in the Spanish Quarter, he can be seen everywhere.

During my research for my trip to Naples and now also for this travel guide, I noticed that many international travel bloggers mention the Quartieri Spagnoli (the Spanish Quarter) as an authentic district of Naples where you can get under the skin of the city.

And that’s true, but I also got some nasty looks from the locals – it seemed that tourists were not particularly welcome in the Spanish Quarter.

While the area has its own charm with local bars and an authentic Neapolitan flair, there are perhaps better accommodations for tourists.

The narrow and often busy streets and the high noise level make it less attractive as a starting point for a classic weekend trip to Naples.

I think it’s still worth visiting Quartieri Spagnoli to experience its unique streets and enjoy a drink in one of the local bars.

The district is located right next to the city’s main shopping street (Via Toledo), so it’s easy to just “pop in”.

Rione Sanità

Rione Sanità is a historic district in Naples known for its complex history.

In the past, the area was characterized by links to organized crime, which gave it a reputation for being less safe. Although progress has been made, caution is still required.

So choose one of the four other suitable areas in Naples that I mention in this guide and I’m sure you’ll have a much better trip to southern Italy.

The historic center and Chiaia offer safety, cultural richness and convenience, ideal for those seeking comfort and easy access to attractions.

The area around Garibaldi station is convenient for budget-conscious travelers and those looking for a good train connection.

The area around Porto on the waterfront is ideal for those who want to stay in hotels with sea views and easy access to the ferry.

Questions about Where to stay in Naples Italy:

What is the best area to stay in Naples?

The historic center of Naples is generally the best area for the average tourist. This area offers an ideal combination of safety, access to cultural attractions and comfort. You can easily stay close to everything and stroll through the charming streets of Naples.

How many days should you spend in Naples?

Three days in Naples is a reasonable amount of time to experience the highlights of the city and get a feel for its unique culture and atmosphere. If you also want to visit Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast, it is advisable to extend your stay to four days. This will give you more time for a relaxed day trip without having to rush to the city’s sights.

Is it better to stay in Naples or Sorrento?

Naples and Sorrento offer very different experiences, and it depends on your preferences as to which city is best for you to stay in.

Naples is a vibrant, historic city rich in culture, history and gastronomy. It’s a fantastic place to experience authentic Italian city life with its bustling streets, famous pizzerias and impressive historical sites. Naples is also an ideal starting point for day trips to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.

Sorrento, on the other hand, is more relaxed and has a charming atmosphere. Sorrento is known for its breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples, its beautiful beaches and its charming historic town center. Sorrento is also a good starting point for exploring the Amalfi Coast and the islands of Capri and Ischia.

I prefer Sorrento as a vacation destination. It offers a relaxed yet very Italian experience, beautiful scenery and good opportunities to explore the coast and nearby attractions. Sorrento is a great place for anyone looking for a quiet and scenic base from which to easily access the many beauties of the region.

Are there beaches in Naples?

Yes, Naples has beaches, but they are often not as famous or idyllic as the beaches on the Amalfi Coast or on nearby islands such as Capri and Ischia. Most of the beaches in Naples are small and pebbly and are mainly located in the coastal areas of Posillipo and Mergellina.

The beaches in Naples are very popular with the locals, especially in summer.

However, they can be very busy and often lack the picturesque qualities of the region’s more secluded beaches. Many travelers take day trips to nearby coastal towns or islands where they find more classic sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.

How do you get from Rome to Naples?

The train is the easiest and fastest way to get from Rome to Naples. Train connections between the two cities are excellent, with frequent departures from Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina stations.

High-speed trains such as Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa and Italo will take you from Rome to Naples in around 1 to 1.5 hours. It’s a convenient, comfortable and efficient way to travel, and you arrive directly at Napoli Centrale, which is located in the center of Naples.

I recommend booking tickets in advance, especially in high season or if you want to travel at specific times.
