To help you decide where to stay, I have compared all parts of the island. In short, the best place to stay in Hvar, Croatia, is Hvar Town, the capital of the island and a fabulous place with so many attractions!
However, as the island is quite large, I have also listed 7 other great places to stay on Hvar.
Not only have I featured the best areas of the island, but Iโve also created a list of the best hotels for each of the recommended areas and for every budget! Whether youโre looking for luxury or a budget traveler, thereโs something for you in my recommendations!
But thatโs not all: if you scroll down, youโll also find the best seafront hotels on Hvar Island (because who wouldnโt want to stay by the water in a place like Hvar Island?).
Whatever you decide, be sure to book your hotels in Hvar, Croatia, in advance! This island is so popular that thousands of tourists come here every year!
NOTE: Hotel prices in Hvar vary dramatically depending on the season, with prices up to $400 higher in high season (July and August). Factor this into your budget if you are traveling in the summer! Prices tend to drop in September, so if you want to save money, book your vacation then.
Letโs finally get the show on the road!
QUICK PICKS FOR YOUR STAY IN HVAR
I know that many of you want to book your hotels in Hvar as soon as possible! So here is a short list of the best hotels on the island of Hvar, all located in the town of Hvar:
- Best luxury hotel: ๐ ADRIANA HVAR SPA HOTEL
- Best price-performance ratio: ๐ PHAROS HVAR HOTEL
- Best cheap accommodation in the center: ๐ WHITE RABBIT HOSTEL

IMPORTANT TIP: When choosing a hotel, look out for a free parking lot. The best way to explore the island is by car, so I strongly recommend renting a car. Do this as soon as you arrive on the island โ not before โ to avoid the high ferry fees. A car is the most convenient way to get around the island of Hvar, but renting a scooter is also a good option.
Check out this map with the best places to stay in Hvar! It will help you visualize all the places I will discuss in this post:

Best accommodations in Hvar
1. HVAR TOWN โ WHERE TO STAY IN HVAR FOR THE FIRST TIME

You only need to travel to Hvar once to fall completely in love with this Croatian island! If itโs your first time on the island, thereโs no better place to stay than the town of Hvar! Located on the west coast of the island, Hvar Town is the main town on the island, full of tourist attractions, beautiful hotels and a lively atmosphere.
NOTE: Before we dive further into the article, I would like to make a distinction between the island of Hvar and Hvar! When I talk about the island of Hvar, I mean the whole island of Hvar, but when I mention Hvar, I mean the town of Hvar, the capital of the island.
A walk through the 13th century Venetian walls and cobbled streets of this beautiful, rustic Mediterranean town will take you back in time โ much like Dubrovnik! A must is the Fortica Fortress(map) โ the walk to the top is breathtaking, the fortress is impressive and the view of the city and nearby islands is unparalleled!
While exploring the town, you should visit Hvar Cathedral, also known as St. Stephenโs Cathedral(map), one of the townโs most important landmarks, and stop off at the Franciscan Monastery(map), another impressive historic church.

But letโs not forget the beautiful beaches in Hvar Town! Most of them are secluded, and if you come very early or in the low season, you might not even find many people there!
One of the most popular beaches in the Hvar area is Pokonji Dol beach(map), a beautiful pebble beach with crystal clear water. I also recommend the Carpe Diem Bar(map) and Hula Hula Hvar(map), both cool beach bars on beautiful beaches!
Hvar Town also has a large harbor area and a port (Map) from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea. Hvar harbor (map) is a great photo spot, but it also has many cafes, bars and restaurants. This area is known for its vibrant nightlife, which is why I recommend it as an ideal destination for couples.
However, if you want to enjoy the unique benefits of Hvar Town, you should book your hotels in advance. The town is a major tourist center and accommodation is booked out quickly, especially in high season!

As I have already mentioned, the main town on the island of Hvar is always full of tourists. This is also where the airport is located and there are so many tourist attractions. This can only mean one thing โ hotels sell out fast (especially the best ones)! Thatโs why I wanted to offer 3 more stunning options alongside the main list, so that anyone who wants to stay in Hvar Town but may have missed the chance to stay in one of the above has an alternative option!

2. JELSA โ WHERE TO RELAX IN HVAR

Located on the central north coast of the island of Hvar, Jelsa is a charming area with olive groves, wineries and a relaxed atmosphere that will help you unwind and forget about everyday life! The town of Hvar is only 30 minutes away by car, so you can easily explore the capital of the island from Jelsa.
I love places that make me forget about everything and everyone and immerse myself in their atmosphere and lifestyle, and thatโs Jelsa in a nutshell! The town is quite old (like most of the island), which only adds to its charm (especially if youโre a lover of history and culture)!
But thatโs not the only thing that makes Jelsa a wonderful place to stay on Hvar. The atmosphere is super relaxed. You wonโt find as many tourists here as in Hvar Town. Perfect if you want to spend a relaxing vacation.
Get ready to admire the centuries-old architecture as you explore the village of Jelsa and enjoy the breathtaking views of the sea and the wonderful smells of the pine forests. Stop at the Vina Tomiฤ winery and taste some delicious local wines before exploring the village further.
Spend your afternoons exploring the quaint boutiques, strolling through small, hidden alleyways and visiting the many bars and restaurants! And if you need a little break from shopping and eating, head to Jelsa Park(map) and enjoy the shade of the trees.

Of course, there are also many pebble beaches! Grebiลกฤe beach (map) is a great swimming beach and the perfect choice if you want to spend a relaxing day in the sun. If you fancy a bit more adventure, Mala Stiniva beach (map) is famous for its cliff jumping โ if youโre brave enough to try it.
One of my favorite things to do on vacation is to find hidden gems โ and Iโm sure thatโs true for most of you. In this case, I wanted to make your search easier and recommend Beach Prapatna (map), a small, secluded beach where you can escape the crowds. Itโs not as easily accessible as other beaches, but itโs definitely worth the effort!
Unfortunately, there are no luxury hotels to stay in Jelsa, Croatia. However, if you really want to stay in a fancy hotel, I recommend the ๐ Labranda Senses Resort in Vrboska, a village just a 10-minute drive from Jelsa.

3. STARI GRAD โ THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IN HVAR FOR HISTORY LOVERS

The entire island of Hvar is a paradise for history and culture lovers, but Stari Grad is the best place to stay in Hvar if you are interested.
Stari Grad is located on the northern coast of the island of Hvar and is only 20 km away from Hvar Town. Although there are many attractions, the town differs from the capital with its quiet atmosphere.
Stari Grad translates as Old Town and dates back to 385 BC.
The old buildings in Stari Grad stand on both sides of the narrow streets, surrounded by pine trees and colorful flowers. Here you will also find a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Plain of Stari Grad (Map). This ancient Greek agricultural plain from the 4th century BC still has its original cultivated areas and walls.
ล kor Square (Map) is the center of the city; from here you can explore the Petar Hektoroviฤ Fortress (Map) and watch the boats in the Nautical Harbor (Map).
Lanterna beach (map) is one of the most popular swimming spots in Stari Grad, but I also recommend you take a day to enjoy Brizenica Bay (map), a beautiful, unorganized beach โ you wonโt regret it!
If you fancy exploring more of the stunning Croatian coastline, head to the Stari Grad Faros ferry port (map) and take a ferry to Split.
PRO TIPP: The best time for an adventure in Split is early in the morning! In high season (May to September) a ferry departs at 7.45am! The ferry ride takes 2 hours and you have (almost) the whole day to explore the city. For the return trip, I recommend taking the ferry back to Stari Grad at 8.30 pm!
Impressed already? Then letโs take a look at the hotels in the oldest town on the island of Hvar!

4. VRBOSKA โ ACCOMMODATION FOR FAMILIES IN HVAR

You didnโt think Iโd write a post about the best accommodation in Hvar without adding an option for families, did you? Vrboska is a quiet village on the north coast of the island of Hvar, half an hourโs drive from the town of Hvar.
The village was founded in the 15th century as a port and has developed into the town you see today!
I think Vrboska is a great place for families in Hvar as itโs quite relaxed, has some beaches and is close to Jelsa and Stari Grad if you want to explore other places too! The place is also surrounded by hills, forests and olive groves, making it the perfect place for nature and outdoor lovers.
You will also find numerous attractions here that will make every member of the family happy! These include the sandy beach (map) and St. Maryโs Church (map), a fortress church from whose roof you can enjoy the view of the village and the harbor.
And the little ones will be delighted if you give them a whole day at Aqua Park Soline (map)! For more fun activities, I recommend windsurfing! The Bota Windsurf Center offers both courses and rental of windsurfing equipment, and children from the age of 7 are welcome to give it a try.
As far as culinary options are concerned, there are quite a few restaurants in Vrboska, of which I would like to highlight ล kojiฤ (map) with its delicious seafood and local produce and Trica Gardelin (map), which not only serves delicious food but also offers a breathtaking view of the sunset.
Letโs take a look at the best hotels in this small town on the island of Hvar:
ACCOMMODATION IN VRBOSKA

5. ZAVALA โ THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IN HVAR FOR BEACH LOVERS

Whoโs up for a Mediterranean vacation in a small village with lots of beaches, olive groves, great wineries and local atmosphere? Sign me up! Zavala is another beautiful place on the south coast of the island of Hvar and one of the best places on the island for those looking for beaches with crystal blue waters.
Away from the hustle and bustle of Hvar Town, 20 miles (30 km) away to be precise, Zavala is a small village where you can get a taste of local life on Hvar. The port is just a short walk from the center of town.
Get ready for a breathtaking view of the Adriatic Sea. The coastline of the village is so charming that the pebble beaches look as if they have been taken from a Renaissance painting.
But since this is THE place for beach vacationers, I would like to recommend some of the best beaches in Zavala. Skalinada Beach (map) and Zavala Beach (map) are the more popular and tourist-frequented beaches, while ลฝuฤica Beach (map) and Petarฤica Beach (map) are a little off the beaten track, more intimate and, above all, less crowded.
If you are looking for more places to visit, I recommend exploring the village of Zastraลพiลกฤe! Itโs only a 30-minute drive from Zavala and is home to the Little Blue Cave (map), a truly impressive natural formation. Be sure to check out the restaurants and bars at the harbor! You canโt leave the island without eating Hvarโs best seafood (or vegetables if youโre vegetarian)! Restaurant Davor (map) is an excellent choice for all diets โ I highly recommend you give it a try.
ACCOMMODATION IN ZAVALA

- LUXURY HOTEL: ๐ Hotel Stella Mare
Admire the view of the Adriatic Sea from the outdoor pool of this hotel in Hvar, which has a beautiful Mediterranean interior and a garden! Each suite has a small kitchenette and a balcony where you can sip your coffee! Afterwards you can enjoy a delicious breakfast in the restaurant.

A hotel right on the beach in Hvar with comfortable rooms with balconies, a restaurant and a common room.

- Affordable hotel: ๐ Pansion Marjan
A guest house with air-conditioned rooms, free parking and a daily breakfast with local specialties and fresh pastries.
THINGS TO DO IN ZAVALA

- Discover the nudist beach of Zavala, Stela beach (Map)
- Go off the beaten track and discover Petarฤica beach and ลฝuฤica beach
- Treat yourself to a delicious meal in the Davor restaurant
6. MILNA โ ACCOMMODATION IN HVAR FOR GOURMETS

The small fishing village of Milna is located near Hvar Town (10 minutes away by car) and is ideal for those who want to be close to the capital, but far enough away from the crowds and busy streets! This picturesque village is famous for its delicious island dishes and homemade olive oil! Not forgetting the incredible wine and other traditional dishes.
Milna is located on the south coast of Hvar, just a stoneโs throw from Hvar Town. There are several pebble beaches in this area that you should definitely visit! Milna Beach (Map) and Beach Mala Milna (Map) are the 2 beaches not to be missed.
You can also explore the marina and the western part of the town. There you will see beautiful examples of Baroque-Renaissance architecture!
But now back to the main reason for a visit to Milna โ the food! Iโm a big foodie, and itโs super important for me (as Iโm sure it is for many of you) to eat delicious food on vacation! Of course, I have a few recommendations for restaurants in Milna.
First of all, there is the Moli Onte restaurant (map), which serves a special fish stew and various meat dishes (the lamb was highly praised). You should also visit Gostionica Mala Milna (map) and try the prawns and mussels.
Fun factor: A very long time ago, in the 18th century, lavender was cultivated in Milna and its oil reached France, where it was used to make perfume!
ACCOMMODATION IN MILNA

- LUXURY HOTEL: ๐ Hotel Fortuna
Wake up to a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea at this beach hotel on the island of Hvar, which has a restaurant and bar. The suites are spacious and have a small balcony overlooking the beach. But when youโre not exploring the south coast of the island, I recommend relaxing in the heated outdoor pool!

- Try the catch of the day at the Notos Hvar restaurant (Map)
- Take a short trip to Hvar Town
7. SUCURAJ โ WHERE TO STAY OFF THE BEATEN TRACK ON HVAR

Are you looking for a place on the island of Hvar that is away from the hustle and bustle? Then Suฤuraj is the ideal place for you! Suฤuraj is the smallest town on the island, located on the east coast and 77 km from Hvar Town.
The small town has a very quiet atmosphere and is a good distance away from the tourist hotspots โ perfect for a stay off the beaten track!
The townโs most important landmark is the Suฤuraj lighthouse (map), one of the oldest lighthouses on the Adriatic. I definitely recommend a walk there โ the path is very scenic and once youโre there, the view is even better!
Suฤuraj, like most other places on the island of Hvar, has some wonderful beaches, but most of the beaches in this part of the island are small and wild, so they are not too crowded. Perna beach (map) and Mlaska beach (map) are my 2 favorites for a beach day in Suฤuraj.
As the town is small, thereโs not too much to do. So if you want a change of scenery, you can visit nearby Bogomolje, another small village with great beaches, or head further inland to Gdinj, another picturesque village where you can spend a pleasant day at the beach.
NOTE: There are no luxury hotels in Suฤuraj. So if you want to treat yourself to an upscale vacation, I suggest staying in Zavala at the ๐ Hotel Stella Mare and exploring Suฤuraj in a day trip โ the drive only takes a little over an hour! In this case, I would recommend renting a car and exploring the island at your leisure.
ACCOMMODATION IN SUฤURAJ

- Medium range: ๐ Apartments IDA Sucuraj
This apartment complex has a shared garden with a large terrace and barbecue facilities, as well as Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

- Affordable hotel: ๐ Apartments San Giorgio
Just a stoneโs throw from the sea, this accommodation offers self-catering studios and free welcome drinks.
THINGS TO DO IN SUฤURAJ
- Walk up to the Suฤuraj lighthouse and enjoy the view
- Swim at Perna beach and Mlaska beach
- Spend a quiet day on the small beach of ฤesminica (map)
- Explore the nearby villages of Bogomolje and Gdinj
- Enjoy lunch at Restoran Fortica (map)
8. SVETA NEDJELJA โ THE BEST AREA FOR A CHEAP STAY IN HVAR

The island of Hvar may not be the best destination for price-conscious travelers, but I can assure you that there are more affordable parts of the island. The best example of this is Sveta Nedjelja, a small village with a quiet atmosphere on the south coast, 18 km (11 miles) from Hvar Town.
One of the best things to do in Sveta Nedjelja is to climb to the top of St. Nicholas (map), where the Church of St. Nicholas is located and you have a breathtaking view of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands. As this is the highest peak on the island (628 m), the hike can be a challenge for some; luckily you can drive almost all the way to the top!
Another viewpoint is the Wide Cave (map), a cave embedded in the rocks from which you have a unique view of the village. Another notable attraction is the Red Rocks (map), red rocks that form caves where you can swim and snorkel. This is also a popular spot for cliff jumping.
Sveta Nedjelja has a number of good beaches to offer: Sveta Nedjelja beach (map) and Skala beach (map) are two of the most popular beaches here, but there are also some other, more secluded beaches that are worth discovering.
Luฤiลกฤa beach (map) is a small, secluded beach and one of the best beaches on the whole island, located just behind Dubovica beach (map). This beach is about a half hour drive from Sveta Nedelja, but I highly recommend getting in your car (or renting one) and driving to Dubovica beach โ youโll thank yourself for it!
NOTE: There are no luxury hotels in Sveta Nedelja. This and the affordable accommodation prices make it an ideal place for budget stays. If you want luxury, you can stay in Hvar Town and head to Sveta Nedelja to experience everything it has to offer.
ACCOMMODATION IN SVETA NEDJELJA

- Medium range: ๐ Apartments Elvira
Beachfront property with outdoor fireplace, barbecue facilities, table tennis and a balcony with sea views.
