Krabi is an area in Thailand that is perfect for tourists looking for a mix of breathtaking nature, some of the best beaches in the world and plenty of opportunities for excursions or complete relaxation, depending on what you are looking for.
Krabi is a region in southern Thailand, about an hour’s flight from Bangkok, and with its airport, it’s easy to start or end a tour of Thailand here.
In other words, it makes perfect sense to stay in Krabi and travel to different areas from there.
I have traveled to Krabi on several trips to Thailand and therefore have a good overview of what is on offer in the different areas.

Below I present the best areas and recommendations for the best accommodation.
Whether you want to stay in a lively city, on one of the best beaches in the world or in a luxury resort, here in Krabi you have the opportunity.
Where to stay in Krabi? Let’s start with the travel guide.
Best areas in Krabi
If you are short on time or need a quick overview, you will find the best accommodation in Krabi here:
- 👉 Ao Nang – the best all-round vacation area ⭐️
- 👉 Railay – Stay on one of the best beaches in the world 🏖️
- 👉 Phi Phi – A lively vacation island with beautiful beaches 🍹
- 👉 Krabi Town – the most important town in Krabi with local life 🇹🇭
- 👉 Koh Lanta – the best island for families with children 👨👩👧👦
- 👉 Tubkaek Beach – a quiet place, ideal for couples 👩❤️👨
Click on the name of the area above to see the best hotels there.
The guide continues below, where I dive deeper into the different areas and recommend hotels.
1. Ao Nang – Best all-round vacation area ⭐️
If you are planning a trip to Thailand and are looking for the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation, then Ao Nang is the place for you.

It is the most important tourist area in Krabi, and there are many good reasons for this:
Everything in Ao Nang is within walking distance – from the hotel to the beach and numerous restaurants.
The city is more or less geared towards tourists.
You can start your morning with a walk on the beach, have a Pad Thai for lunch and take a longtail boat to Railay Beach – all without a long journey.
Get a feel for Ao Nang in this video:
The range of hotels in Ao Nang extends from budget to pure luxury, so there is something for every budget.
Many accommodations offer fantastic pools, spa facilities and magnificent views of the limestone cliffs for which this part of Thailand is famous.
See the best hotels in Ao Nang here. 👈
However, the real appeal of Ao Nang lies in its location, which makes it the perfect springboard for some of the most beautiful nature experiences in Thailand.

As already mentioned, you can take a longtail boat to Railay Beach, which is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand (more on this later in the travel guide), or take a 4-island boat tour to paradise islands, as you have already seen on Instagram.
There are countless options for sea excursions, and you can also take a car to places within Krabi such as the Tiger Cave Temple, Klong Root, and then there’s the Krabi Airport, which is only about 25 km from Ao Nang.
It is convenient to go on day trips and return home in the evening to an area with lots of life.
The markets glow with colorful lights and the stalls are full of local handicrafts and delicacies.
Restaurants and bars offer international and local dishes, and you’ll find everything from quiet, romantic corners to places where music and dancing go on late into the night.

So if you’re looking for a vacation spot in Krabi that offers the best of everything – from easy access to stunning natural beauty to a safe base with plenty of stores and restaurants – then Ao Nang is the place for you.
If I had to mention a disadvantage of Ao Nang, it would undoubtedly be that it is a very touristy area. So if you are only traveling to Thailand to unwind and get to know the local side of the country, then Ao Nang is not the place for you.
On the other hand, if you want to travel around and visit several places in Thailand, Ao Nang is a really good place to stay for a few days and go on excursions from there.
Best places to stay in Ao Nang
On my fourth trip to Thailand, I researched hotels in Ao Nang in detail and was surprised at how cheap they were compared to hotels in the main resorts of Phuket and other popular vacation destinations in Thailand.
So you get a lot for your money in this area – here are some of my favorite hotels in Ao Nang.
The 👉 Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort & Spa Krabi offers a prime beachfront location, which means you can step onto the soft sand right from your doorstep.

This resort is a hit with families and couples looking for a mix of sun, sea and spa luxury.
Guests particularly praise the impressive pool areas, the close access to the sea and the resort’s ability to convey a feeling of exclusive seclusion despite its central location.
Reviews often highlight the friendly staff and spacious, clean rooms, making it an obvious choice for those who appreciate comfort and service.
Located in the heart of Ao Nang, the 👉 Holiday Inn Resort is a gem for budget-conscious travelers and families.
This place offers the reliable comfort Holiday Inn is famous for, wrapped in Thai hospitality.

Guest reviews praise the clean and comfortable surroundings, the child-friendly pools and the undisturbed relaxation.
Thanks to its central location, the hotel is just a stone’s throw away from the beach and the shopping and dining options in Ao Nang, making it a safe choice for an effortless and enjoyable vacation.
A perfect place to stay for families with children traveling to Krabi, but it’s not just a family-friendly hotel.
The 👉 Andaman Breeze Resort is a hidden gem away from the bustling beachfront of Ao Nang, offering an oasis of calm and spectacular views from its elevated pool area.
The hotel is significantly cheaper than the previously mentioned accommodation in Ao Nang.

The critics praise the relaxed atmosphere, the helpful staff and the good price-performance ratio of the restaurant.
The rooms are comfortable and well-maintained, and although you are some distance from the beach, the magnificent view of the limestone cliffs makes up for the distance.
Perfect for those who prefer to sleep away from the noise but still want easy access to Ao Nang’s many offerings.
2. Railay – Stay on one of the best beaches in the world 🏖️
On my first trip to Thailand, we started in Bangkok and flew to Krabi, drove about 30 minutes and then took a boat to Railay. And I have to admit that I can highly recommend a stay in this part of Krabi.

Railay is one of those unique places on the globe where you can find a tranquillity that is hard to beat.
Railay is not an island, but because of the majestic limestone cliffs that surround this small area, you can’t drive there, so it has a very relaxed island atmosphere.
A stay in Railay means waking up to the sight of majestic limestone cliffs rising from the turquoise sea and walking along some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Railay West is the most popular beach, known as Railay Beach, with soft sand and crystal clear waters, while Railay East offers more budget hotels – there’s no beach here, but a cheaper price.
And you can walk over to Railay West in a few minutes.
See the best hotels in Railay. 👈
The evenings in this little vacation paradise are quiet, with a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy a drink under the stars or listen to the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar.
In other words, there really isn’t much going on. So you need to know that you can only enjoy the beautiful nature and tranquillity during a stay in Railay.

From here you can also go on many of the same excursions (at least on boat trips) as from Ao Nang.
For example, I did the popular Four Islands Tour from Railay, and I think it’s a must-do.
If I have to mention one downside, it’s that you can feel isolated and may miss going into a 7/11 and buying some cheap snacks – the prices in the small kiosks and restaurants in Railay are quite high compared to Ao Nang, for example.
They know you don’t have many options, so the prices are high 😀 .
Nevertheless, I recommend spending a few days here if you want to get to know one of the most beautiful areas in Thailand – and perhaps the world.
Whereabouts in Railay
Railay is the smallest area in Krabi that I mention in this guide, so there is less choice than usual. But here are some of my favorite hotels in Railay – in different price ranges.
The Rayavadee 👈 in Railay West is the epitome of luxury in one of Thailand’s most breathtaking locations.
With its exclusive location, surrounded by cliffs and sea, this resort offers a unique combination of natural beauty and five-star service.

Past guests rave about the attentive service, exquisite dining options and private villas that offer peace and privacy.
The reviews often highlight the relaxing spa area and the activities organized by the resort. For travelers seeking ultimate relaxation and luxury, Rayavadee is the perfect choice.
The Railay Village Resort 👈 welcomes families and anyone looking for comfort and relaxation with open arms.
This family-friendly hotel in the heart of Railay, right on the beach, is renowned for its hospitality and superb facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay for guests of all ages.

Reviews praise the spacious rooms, inviting pool area and easy access to Railay Beach.
The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff do everything they can to ensure that families have everything they need for an unforgettable vacation.
The Railay Village Resort 👈 is an excellent choice for those seeking comfort and friendliness in a beautiful setting.
Railay Phutawan Resort is ideal for budget-conscious travelers who dream of experiencing the beauty of Railay without breaking the budget.

Located in the heights, away from the hustle and bustle of the beach, the hotel offers guests a peaceful retreat with breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs.
Guest reviews emphasize the hotel’s good value for money, the courteous service and the comfortable, clean rooms.
Although it is not directly on the beach, the nearby path provides easy access to Railay East and West.
3. Phi Phi – A lively vacation island with beautiful beaches 🍹
Now let’s move on to the first island in Krabi in this travel guide.
The Phi Phi Islands consist of two islands, but only one of them is inhabited – the other is home to the famous Maya Bay, which is known from the cult film The Beach.

Phi Phi, both the inhabited island of Phi Phi Don and the island called Phi Phi Leh in Maya Bay, are popular excursion destinations for tourists on the mainland of Krabi and Phuket.
See the best hotels on Phi Phi here. 👈

The popularity of the island is reflected in the small town, which is so compact that there are no cars and you can walk from one side of the island (where the ferry docks) to the other, where the main beach is located.
There are many hotels in different price ranges here, and it is extremely important to do your research before booking.

When I first visited Phi Phi, I made the mistake of staying near the many bars and restaurants and ended up booking a hotel on a private beach – charming but far away from the nightlife.
While the island is known for its vibrant party culture that attracts a lively crowd of globetrotting youth, that’s not all. Even though the night provides festivities, the days offer the opportunity to discover the soul of the island.
Nature trails meander through lush greenery and secret beaches where you can enjoy the peace and quiet.
Get an impression of Phi Phi in this video:
You can also find quieter accommodation away from the main areas, where you can wake up to the sound of the waves and a spectacular sunrise.
However, many tourists come to experience this unique jewel of Thailand, so as I said before, the local culture is limited.
Some would say that there are too many people to really enjoy the island, especially in the high season in January and February.
- I’m not saying this to dissuade you from staying on Phi Phi, but I’ve promised an honest guide to the best places to visit in Krabi – so I’m sharing both the good and the not so good so you can make an informed decision.
Maya Bay doesn’t look quite like in the movie – the background is computer-generated 😀 .
Where to stay in Phi Phi
You should be careful when booking your hotel on Phi Phi. Depending on where you stay on the island, the atmosphere is very different – so I would like to recommend a few hotels that cater to different types of travelers.
The SAii Phi Phi Island Village 👈 is in a class of its own and is located in a secluded part of Phi Phi, where the silence and sounds of nature create an atmosphere of peace and exclusivity.
This resort is a favorite among those who want to escape the tourist areas and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the island.

Past guests rave about the private bungalows along the pristine beach, the personalized service and the eco-friendly initiatives.
With its own stretch of beach and a feeling of secluded luxury, SAii Phi Phi Island Village is the perfect retreat for travelers looking for an authentic and relaxed Phi Phi experience.
👉 The Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort is one of the best hotels on the island, and its location is arguably the best – right on the most beautiful beach on the island and just a few minutes’ walk from Phi Phi’s “town”.
However, the hotel is located at the end of the beach, far away from the parties, so you don’t have to listen to booming bass all night long.

This hotel offers a charming blend of Thai hospitality and modern comfort, making it an attractive base for visitors to the island.
Guest reviews highlight the resort’s gorgeous infinity pool, direct beach access and cozy bungalows that provide a sense of privacy and tranquility amidst the island’s hustle and bustle.
Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort is an ideal place to stay on Phi Phi for travelers who want to indulge in comfort and easy access to all that Phi Phi has to offer.
And then there’s the complete opposite – a hotel near where everything happens in the evening.
👉 The Phi Phi Indigo Hotel is the obvious choice for night owls and party-loving souls looking to immerse themselves in Phi Phi’s nightlife.

The hotel is located in an area known for its many bars and lively atmosphere on the streets.
Down on the beach at the Slinky Bar there are parties every night, so you can easily get from this hotel to wherever there is “something going on” on Phi Phi.
If you’ve come to celebrate life and meet new people in a festive atmosphere, Phi Phi Indigo is the place where your search for fun never ends.
It’s also a super budget-friendly hotel where things are still well organized.
4. Krabi Town – the main town in Krabi with local life 🇹🇭
Krabi Town is an ideal place for those looking for a local and authentic Thai experience.
In contrast to the beach areas frequented by tourists such as Phi Phi and Ao Nang, Krabi Town offers an authentic taste of everyday Thai life with its bustling markets, street food and friendly locals.

Krabi Town is an excellent starting point for exploring the natural wonders of the region, as day trips to nearby national parks and beaches can be easily organized.
Find out about the best hotels in Krabi Town here. 👈
This place is ideal for anyone who wants to combine relaxation and adventure: During the day, you can go on a kayak tour through the mangroves and return to the original atmosphere of the city in the evening.
The nightlife is less intense than in Phi Phi or Ao Nang, but there is still a good selection of restaurants and bars for evening entertainment.
Krabi Town is the place for you if you want to immerse yourself in the Thai community and live a little more in harmony with the locals, while having easy access to some of the country’s most stunning scenery.
The biggest disadvantage is the lack of a beach in Krabi Town. Please bear this in mind before booking your hotel here.
Where to stay in Krabi Town
I realize that Krabi Town may not be the most obvious choice to spend an entire vacation in Thailand, but I think it deserves to be mentioned – after all, it is the town that gives the entire region its name.
What’s more, the hotels in Krabi Town are affordable!
That’s why I’m presenting two good accommodations in Krabi Town that offer good value for money.
👉 The Seens Hotel offers an affordable stay without compromising on quality. Located in the city center, it offers guests easy access to local markets and cultural attractions.

The small pool on the hotel’s roof terrace is a real hit and offers a refreshing dip with a view of the city’s rooftops.
Previous guests have praised the clean and modern facilities, the good service and the reasonable prices.
👉 The Brown Hotel is a stylish accommodation in the heart of Krabi Town.
It is known for its elegant furnishings and sophisticated ambience and offers a luxurious respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It is located near the Krabi Night Market, which you should definitely visit.
Reviews from previous guests mention the modern and tastefully decorated rooms, the excellent customer service and the hotel’s central location, which makes it easy to explore the city’s many attractions.
5. Koh Lanta – the best island for families with children 👨👩👧👦
Koh Lanta is a dream destination for families and anyone looking for a quiet retreat away from the busy tourist areas in Thailand.

The island is known for its relaxed atmosphere, ideal for families with children.
Here, the busy crowds of backpackers and night owls are replaced by quiet days on wide beaches and a friendly local culture that welcomes all ages.
In recent years, Koh Lanta has also become popular with digital nomads who appreciate the tranquil surroundings.
I was here on my first trip to Thailand and loved the atmosphere, which was in stark contrast to the fast pace of life in Ao Nang and Phi Phi – and then the nature on Koh Lanta is also beautiful.
See the best hotels on Koh Lanta here. 👈
The beaches here are ideal for the little ones in the family with their gentle waves and clear, shallow water, making them safe playgrounds for children.
Koh Lanta is not only suitable for families, but also for those looking for a place to relax.
On Koh Lanta, you can immerse yourself in yoga meditation and enjoy healthy, delicious food at the many beach restaurants that focus on organic and local produce.
There is also a lot of local life on Koh Lanta.

So if you are looking for a place where you can relax with your family, enjoy nature right on your doorstep and experience an authentic Thai atmosphere, then Koh Lanta is the best place to stay in Krabi.
The island is about a 1.5 hour drive from Krabi airport – you take a small ferry from the mainland which only takes a few minutes. We took a minibus and didn’t even have to get off, so it was very quick.
If you’re considering Koh Lanta, also read my guide to Phuket, where I tell you about Koh Yao Yai, which has a bit of the same vibe – although it’s even less visited by tourists.
Best places to stay in Koh Lanta
Accommodation options on Koh Lanta range from luxurious resorts to charming beachfront bungalows and cater to all preferences and budgets.
As Koh Lanta is a relatively large island, your experience can vary greatly depending on where you stay.
Here are some of the best family-friendly hotels on the island, each in different price categories:
👉 The Lanta Sand Resort & Spa is an ideal retreat for families and couples and offers a variety of accommodation, including family rooms with private plunge pools.

Guests have praised the extensive amenities, the inviting beach and the attentive service.
Located directly on the beach, the Lanta Sand is ideal for those who want to spend a quiet family vacation in a picturesque setting.
👉 The Lanta Castaway Beach Resort has a special place in the hearts of many returning guests due to its family-friendly ambience and welcoming atmosphere.
It is known for its good value for money, and many guests opt for a longer stay.

The helpfulness of the staff, the clean and comfortable facilities and the child-friendly beach nearby are always praised.
👉 The Long Beach Chalet is known for its combination of cozy rooms and an excellent location on Long Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

The chalet is popular for its direct access to the beach and proximity to local restaurants serving fresh seafood.
Guests appreciate the well-equipped rooms and the general comfort offered by the location.
As previously mentioned, there are a variety of areas, beaches and hotels to choose from on Koh Lanta. It is therefore recommended to explore the full range of hotels on Koh Lanta here.
6. Tubkaek Beach – a quiet area, ideal for couples 👩❤️👨
Tubkaek Beach is Krabi’s best-kept secret – a small, exclusive enclave where luxury and tranquillity coexist.
This quiet stretch of beach is a true paradise for couples looking for a romantic getaway where they can replace the hustle and bustle of everyday life with relaxing days and intimate evenings.

Against the backdrop of the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea meeting the fine sand, you will find some of the most luxurious resorts in the region.
Tubkaek is perfect for those seeking first-class service, exclusive spa treatments and gourmet meals overlooking stunning islands such as Koh Hong and Koh Lao Lading (worth a visit by longtail boat).
See the best hotels in Tubkaek here 👈
Plus, Tubkaek is just a short drive from Ao Nang, so you can easily switch from seclusion to adventure.
Couples can immerse themselves in Ao Nang’s vibrant markets and restaurant scene or take day trips to nearby attractions before returning to their peaceful oasis.
Tubkaek is for those who want to enjoy the peace and beauty of one of Thailand’s most exclusive areas while still having access to local culture and activities close by.
Best places to stay in Tubkaek
If you are traveling to Krabi with children, it makes no sense to stay in this area. The hotels I mention below are therefore exclusively for couples. And there are some really great accommodations here on Tubkaek Beach.
Let’s start with the best of all.
👉 The Banyan Tree Krabi is the epitome of luxury and relaxation for couples who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Located on peaceful Tubkaek Beach, the hotel welcomes guests with tranquillity and refined elegance.
Reviews from previous guests are a clear testament to the resort’s luxurious rooms, spectacular views of the Andaman Sea and outstanding spa, which offers world-class treatments.
The Banyan Tree Krabi is the perfect choice for couples looking to immerse themselves in an intimate and tranquil setting.

Perfect for couples who are looking for a relaxing vacation but don’t necessarily need all the luxurious facilities.

Frequently asked questions:
Where is the best place to stay in Krabi?
The best place to stay in Krabi depends on what you are looking for on your trip. If you want a lively atmosphere with easy access to restaurants and day trips, Ao Nang is ideal.
For a remote and scenic experience, Railay is ideal, accessible only by boat and known for its breathtaking beauty. Krabi Town offers a more local flair with cultural experiences and markets.
Phi Phi is for those who want to combine beauty with nightlife, while Koh Lanta is the perfect choice for families looking for a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.
Tubkaek is ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway in luxurious resorts and quiet beaches.
Which is better, Krabi or Phuket?
Krabi and Phuket offer unique experiences, and the choice depends on personal preference. Phuket is known for its vibrant nightlife, shopping and tourist attractions.
Krabi, on the other hand, is praised for its magnificent nature and dramatic landscapes, particularly the imposing limestone cliffs that rise out of the sea and offer a more relaxed atmosphere. Krabi also offers less crowded beaches and a more authentic Thai experience that might appeal to those seeking tranquillity and nature.
I like both regions of Thailand – each place has its own characteristics.
Is Krabi worth a visit?
Yes, absolutely! With its breathtaking limestone cliffs, crystal clear waters and picturesque beaches, Krabi is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. The area is a paradise for nature lovers, adventurers and those seeking relaxation in idyllic surroundings. It would be a shame to travel to Thailand and not experience Krabi and the islands in the Andaman Sea.
When is the best time to travel to Krabi?
The ideal time to visit Krabi is between November and April, when the weather is dry and sunny, ideal for beach days and exploring the scenic beauty. This is the high season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.
But a visit in the low season, for example in August, can also be appealing. Even though the sun doesn’t shine as often and it can rain more, the temperatures are still warm and you can enjoy the region’s attractions without the crowds. Hotels and resorts are often much cheaper outside the high season. For example, I visited Phi Phi, Railay and Koh Lanta in August and it was still a great experience.
